I've used the internet name "Donnageddon" for many years now in forums, and a quick google will reveal my secret identity. And that I am a vicious foul mouthed bastard.
I have used several themes for my avatars, and try never to repeat the same avatar. My favorites have been the incarnations of Vishnu, and currently, characters from the animated TV show "Home Movies". I have also used historic monuments, and classical composers. I have no idea what my avatars says about me, but I would trust google. I am a vicious foul mouthed bastard. But only when I get sucked into political debates. Otherwise I am a saintly soft spoken bastard. |

Second of all, karma to you, kaz, for thinking of me and Sandra Bullock in the same thought! I <3 her. Just ask my wife. Sheʻs been told the truth about my undying love for Gracie Hart ![]() And I believe I said it before, but Iʻll say it again- your daughter is a great artist. I totally picture you that way, noseless and all. Nicer that way- no need to worry about snot or boogies hiding up in there, in plain view to everyone but you. |

As to the original question - I'm going to have to go with "Very yes!" I am absolutely influenced to think a certain way about a poster by their avatar. And I think it makes sense that it is so - after all we humans are used to much more bandwidth out of our communication channels, via expressions, micro-expressions, the way someone dresses or wears their hair, their shoes, and even their smell! I think it's normal for us to have an inclination or another based on more things than diction and post content. Even a bland avatar says something about the poster - that they don't want one, and are bucking the trend for some reason.
Just like linguistic relativity, however, there is no reason for us to be bound by those impressions, particularly if someone's avatar changes a lot, or if their avatar doesn't give off a suitable personality indication. I have definitely noticed though that when what someone posts something vastly different from what I've learned to expect from them, I experience cognitive dissonance which just...makes my brain hurt. "Wait, that's a ...guy???" An earlier poster mentioned that our avatars are what we wished we were like, and I think that's spot on. As for myself, I used to use a picture of a blue-haired anime chika in all my online activities. Then I dyed my hair blue. And here I am. |

When I think of Gracie, I think of penguins dancing on a Hawaiian beach.
It's her own fault, really. |

I canʻt remember the way I used to picture you, but I do know I still think of you as Donna (but a boy Donna) and now I picture you as a funny looking boy with an orange aura (thanks to your two latest avatars). An orange-auraed boy with a 5th grade sense of humor. But in a nice way. ![]() |
