You should!
We got a few cheap DVD box sets of classic movies from a big retail store last weekend, so we also watched An American in Paris, that I loved and watched again Monday night. Next stop: Mrs Miniver.

On the subject of Film Noir, one I can strongly recommend is "D. O. A." (the 1988 version starring Dennis Quaid). Although this version shares similarities with the original, it goes in its own way that will keep you guessing until the end.

This is a great movie, haven't seen it for a while. I should watch it again sometime.

Here's a must see for anybody who likes Indie movies and film noir, the absolutely brilliant 'Brick' from a few years ago. Snappy 1940's dialogue, a plot straight out of the best Noir and all set around a high school. Genius.

hm, lately i've taken to avoiding films made from books i liked, but maybe i'll take a chance on this one.

my sentiments exactly. i'll watch anything with tom waits in it, and this one has johnny depp too and made by terry gilliam ? i really don't see how i could possibly not love it. in fact i planned to see that weeks ago, but then i hurt my foot. now i realise i *still* haven't seen it.

oh, that looks brilliant ! i read a book by Philippe Petit (the funambule in that documentary) a long time ago called "Traité du funambulisme" ("Treatise on tightrope walking" ?) which i remember really loving. i wonder if i can find it again. if memory serves i got it from the library at the time. i didn't know there was a film about him.

adding this film to my list.

thanks for that review sparrow, it's a very interesting perspective. i think it's indicative of gilliam's genius (as well as tom waits' genius, obviously ) that despite his reservations about the film as a whole, kermode nonetheless recommends that people not only see it once but in fact see it twice.

just a general FYI.... the previews look fantastic, and it probably SHOULD be fantastic. but Ledger died during the filming of this and apparently it is a train wreck

Just finished watching Cold Souls with Paul Giamatti portraying himself. It's a dark comedy that has some decent laughs, but I just loved the overall performances and the way it was shot. Also the idea behind this one; putting your soul on storage for awhile so it doesn't get in the way, was instantly appealing.

Here's a trailer:

Next up (whenever I get the time) A Serious Man by the Coen Brothers.

One of the few books to movies I liked was the Lord of the Rings trilogy. A few things got compressed, and I miss having Tom Bombadil in it, but overall, I liked it.
