This is dependent on whether you can turn off the backlight on the PDA. On my current device I can. On my previous one I couldn't, which was annoying. (And it fact, I could via a hack, but didn't discover the hack till after the device was retired and replaced due to hardware failure. )

As far as children are concerned with regard to color devices...

Children are really just miniature inebriated demolition teams. A $4 book that can be chewed on, drooled on, spilled on, torn, thrown, creased, drawn on, and fairly easily recycled is actually pretty good technology.

I'm all for using technology in education...especially in special needs environments and with teenagers and adults...but a crappy ebook reader with a color screen is not really anything approaching an adequate replacement (or even supplement) for simple color books.

Hmm. Can't wait to hear the truth behind the B&N press release. I imagine we'll get it eventually. Could be PL's prototype yields took a dump recently or could be some B&N marketing weenie ran with the slimmest of encouragement. That'd be straight out of a Dilbert comic. Scott Adams has a knack for cutting to the heart of common corporate behavior and mocking it.

I don't see how turning the backlight off would make a screen anymore daylight readable. It just gets overpowered in the sunlight anyways.

The critical difference between a reflective LCD and transmissive LCD is that the former has a reflector behind it, while the latter has a light source in its place. Now transflective LCDs have a special semi-reflective/transmissive polymer (appropriately called a "transflector") in between the LCD and backlight, though the contrast is still not as good as a true reflective LCD.

You would have to see it. With backlight off, my device is quite readable outdoors in sunlight. With backlight on, it isn't.

If you meant the Zodiac 2, that has a transflective LCD. Which are still far less common than transmissive LCDs.

Admittedly I don't have as much experience with the transflective class of displays. Though I suppose the backlight might somehow be obscuring the transflector.

It is indeed the Zodiac 2. As I said, with backlight turned completely off, it's quite readable in sunlight.

My previous device was a Tungsten E, which would not let me turn the backlight completely off. I found out after retiring it for hardware failure and getting a Zodiac that a hack existed to turn off the backlight entirely, and that it too was usable outdoors it that were done.

The Tungsten E also has a transflective LCD.

Looks like it's going to be a dual screen reader. Standard e-ink screen for reading and a touch-sensitive LCD for menus, keyboard, etc.

I've really noticed that a big chunk of people around here have their name typed in, rather than part of their signature. Some of them, such as Ahi, use a signature but type their name anyway.

The rep still said what he said, and the first post was reporting that. The report of what he said is still correct. Also, we have yet to see if this is "really" true or not. B&N is having an event on Oct 20th. I expect we will get more details then.
