I don't think the library addition will be offer outside of the US. US libraries are tax payer funded.

I don't think that's it. The manager called me on Friday said it was in, I could come in and take a look to see which one I wanted. I went in on Monday morning and he was very sheepish saying he couldn't even show me until after the press release. So selling them is one thing, but to not even show me? and not until Friday, but until after the press release.

I assume because they put them on the shelves early and weren't supposed to display/sell them until today when they were official announced.

Yet if you're going for the "best screen", period, the 505 arguably still holds the crown. Lucky us, indeed.

I broke my one and got back a refurbished, and I'm definitely holding on to this. Given the fact that Sony is not going to make a logical upgrade for the 505 in a long time, I would hold onto it for a while.

I do think the library access feature is huge. This "e-borrowing" feature is gonna hit Amazon where it hurts IMO. I heard a guy on a train yesterday showing his Kindle to a couple of friends -- So-o-o-o cool that he can downlad free previews of books. Uh-huh. And then you have to buy the books from Amazon. While I've been borrowing my books free on my Reader for quite some time now!

Still not inclined to buy the Daily Reader when available--don't need wireless. I'm leaning towards the Pocket 300 (portability and clarity are key for me.) Will check one out in person this week, I hope.
It seems that you can check out from all Overdrive US libraries. It's just that NYPL is the biggest. Egadget mentioned that.

Yea, heh. I'm kind-of a lurker on the Calbre stuff. It took me longer than it should have to figure out how to embed a picture. I love my 505, though. I got started with Mobipocket on a Nokia E61 (with full dictionary support and self-adjusting back-light thanks to Nokia's superb engineering) and have been missing the buy on-device and dictionary features. I had high hopes for this release and--while I'll withhold final judgement until I hold one--this is not looking good.

The more I see what's available now, the more I think the PRS-505 was the "Perfect Storm" of e-Readers. Even after almost two years no one has been able to produce a device that is significantly better for reading books.

I would think publishers hate this...the ability to check out ebooks for free They don't make any money. If the ebook wave really catches on many more people will stop buying books, or at least not as many

I think it's huge making library books available for free from different states. That in itself blows the PRS-505 out of the water!

Let's not turn this into a 505 owner satisfaction declaration thread. So now that we have all the details out, and have been through a lot of pics. What are the biggest pro/cons you guys see in the new model?

You can already get eBooks from libraries that have ePub/PDF ebooks using Digital Editions. I think they are just building the support into their own software... I think alot of "mainstream" users are confused with ADE and Sony Library software being separate and having separate Accounts and logins.

Yet I see myself using my mobi-based Treo 650 far more, because of lookup and annotation capabilities. It's a shame they couldn't get out a better 600.

Library support is also available via sony's ebook store for the rest of us:

Today also marks the launch of Sony's Library Finder application. Sony, working with OverDrive (www.overdrive.com), the leading global digital distributor of eBooks and to libraries, will now offer visitors to the eBook Store by Sony easy access to their local library's collection of eBooks. Thousands of libraries in the OverDrive network offer eBooks optimized for the Sony Reader, and visitors can now find these libraries by typing their zip code into the Library Finder. Through the selected library's download website, visitors can check out eBooks with a valid library card, download them to a PC and transfer to their Reader. At the end of the library's lending period, eBooks simply expire, so there are never any late fees.
