I believe the ashes kept in the urn are actually the residuum of the bails that were burnt at the time of the original defeat of England by Australia, some time around 4000 BC.

According to Wikipedia:
"The contents of the urn are reputed to be the ashes of an item of cricket equipment, possibly a bail, ball or stump. The original "Ashes" urn, though, is extremely delicate. What the players "celebrate" with at the end of the series is a replica. It's probably the smallest trophy in any sport, being only some 2" high!
