Well, you are wrong and the wikipedia article is correct. I have also been online a long time.

I've been online a long time too. Hated Kermit, never quite knew if I could make it work or not. Didn't know nuthin about no trolls, except at some of the high-tech fantasy game BBs.

"I am looking at a mailbox."
"I am opening a mailbox."
A letter is in the mailbox.
"I am taking the letter."
The letter is addressed to Bridge Troll.
"I am opening the letter."
(text of letter prints on screen)
"I am closing the letter."
"I am closing the mailbox."
"I am looking at the sidewalk."

Excitement? You bet!

[QUOTE=Hellmark;557441]Nomesque, well, it is true. I've worked with a lot of people from Australia over the years (the one job, I was pretty much the only American), and so many of them hated the government, to the point they seriously consider moving to another country.

I think each country has its good and bad points. We lived in the US for 4 years and my husband worked in an American company. Both systems have their pluses and minus but I dont think either are so dramatic that one would have to leave a country because of it. What's that saying "the grass is always greener......"

Funny the Aussie's you know want to live in the US and the Americans that are here now that we know want to stay in Australia. I do have to concede that our ebook selections over here are absolutely dreadful and over priced ( some are dearer than a paperback) so thats a big plus for the US. Oh to have a kindle in my hands................oh to dream...........

I've been "online" since I was 11 years of age (first with the extremely obscure Prestel/Micronet viewdata service, BBSs, and fidonet) and have worked for internet service providers since April of 1995... So thats 21 years online, with 15+ years working in the field.

I can safely state that I have _never_ heard your definition of "troll" before now.

And a "flame" was and is a post sent specifically to deliberately insult someone else.

I would point to the existence of "alt.troll" back in 1994 (as shown in the google groups usenet archive) to back up my interpretation for the term.

http://groups.google.co.uk/group/alt...art=30220&sa=N

Thats not to say that the term wasn't also used on IRC within a similar timeframe.

It is, of course possible that the term was used in slightly differing ways at different times and places.

Yes thats what I meant in that last line. Either way I would argue that the Usenet definition is the dominant one nowadays.

And I was online when we were still banging rocks together to create custom TCP/IP packages which we then had to carry uphill both ways through rain and sleet and, wait, what were we talking about again?

You had rocks? Lucky bastards... we had to bang our heads together, and TCP wasn't around, so we had to use the X.25 protocol! Rocks indeed!

I also can't count, thats 14 years not 15. :-/

I used to be able to tell the difference between a fax and a modem pickup based purely on the sound being made. Not sure I could do it now.

How about we just say it’s a lonely, angry troll that is looking for a girlfriend as well as spoiling for a fight? We can add that it also lives under a bridge in Australia where it is unhappy with the government, but of course, does not represent all the people of this fine country/continent. For some reason, it also likes rocks - I don’t know, maybe it eats them. In its hunger for both a date and conflict, it takes the appearance of a gonk (I have no idea what that is, I’m just trying to be inclusive here) as it stalks its prey hoping to avoid the dreaded GRUE.

Oh, and I found the mailbox, it was West of the House.
