this is the problem with buttering toast- you know that's not going to melt right, and it'll tear holes in the toast as you try to spread it.... but I do that to regular bread before putting it onto the frying pan for grilled cheese.

I'll be looking forward to the special. I really wanna know how they're going to spread the cold chunk of butter on that fragile, innocent toast...

You know, my own grandma (who did live in the desert outside Tucson for about 3 months before going back to FL because in Tucson, and I quote, her "face [was] falling off, it's so dry!" hard to catch the guys she wanted with a falling off face), anyway, so she used to keep butter out in a butter holder

and my mom insisted that could *not* be healthy. Butter MUST be refridgerated. So now I'm just a confused adult, afraid to leave my butter out of the fridge for more than about 5 minutes at a time....

the device DG posted has water in the bottom part, it keeps the butter fresh. I have at times kept butter on a butter plate in a cupboard with no problem, but it doesn't last as long

Okay, no. what you are showing is a regular butter dish. I have one exactly like it!! Real butter will turn rancid if left out for extended periods of time. At big familly dinners, I have been know to put the butter out a couple of hours before dinner so that it will be room temp, tho.

The butter bells or crocks, use a base of water to keep it cool enough not to spoil, yet soft enough to spread.

And, no disrespect to you grandma, but I'd rather have my face fall off than melt off........

One of my great aunts would get the butter out about an hour before breakfast, and then put it away immediately after in case she went out, because she didn't want the butter running out to meet her!

Buttering hotel toast can be a pain. The toast will invariably arrive lukewarm, and a bit soggy, despite the toast rack; and the butter will have just been taken out of a bowl of ice cubes. End result, trying to spread the butter results in ripping the toast to shreds. At that point, I give up, lay thin slices of butter on top and then put marmalade over it . Or put the butter on my saucer next to my cup for a few moments...

I don't like butter (skeevie shivers) but, if I am buttering my mom's toast, I tend to take slivers of butter and put em on a warm, so I can spread them. There's something about years of ripping bread and/or toast that made me find a way so she didn't give me that... look!
