Actually, if you look at the pictures in the “cracking the DR” thread, it doesn't look all that easy. There just isn't a lot of room. (The ribbing that is in the way is probably important for stiffness, which in turn is needed for protecting the screen when the reader is in your bag.)

Yes, I have noticed that. But perhaps removing some parts of the ribbing won't make the screen break. The main issue here seem to be disassembling and then assembling the device (not to mention the replacement battery).
