Yes, I would mind ads! I avoid ads. For television I've set up a HTPC (Home Theatre PC) with SageTV and added commercial-skipping software so I don't even have to pick up my remote to skip the blasted annoyances. For DVDs I rip to my hard drive so I don't have to watch the opening adverts. In my web browser, Firefox, I use No Script to avoid 99% of online ads. The only time I voluntarily watch ads is during the Super Bowl even though this year's ads weren't all that spectacular.

No!! - No ads in e-books.
The next step would be the device for free and every 5 minutes it will download an ad and present it to you and you can't do anything against it. So - also no reader with wispernet or wifi for free! They wil get you for that and for me, it's not worth the money safed. Just my two cents Take care harry |

No, I wouldn't buy books with ads in them. I doubt I'd even read them if they were free. Ads and books just don't mix.

This has been an entertaining thread to read! On one hand, the vote is pretty close to neck and neck... but there are far more "God, No! No to ads!" voices in the replies...
Personally, I don't know what the big deal is. Novels have ads in them now... I never hear anyone complain, or return a book, or throw it on the ground in irritation, because it has an ad in it. (Usually it's just an ad for more books from the author or publisher, in the same vein as the book purchased, so it's generally the kind of ad people want to see.) Ads subsidize content, to the extent that consumers can get more content for less. We wouldn't have had over-the-air radio or television in America without it. So what if it means you sit through a commercial? Do what the rest of us do: Go get a snack during a commercial. DVD? Start the thing fifteen minutes before you will be ready to watch, and take care of a few things first... you'll find it's there at the "play" page when you get there. It's just an ad. We're all already conditioned to ignore the ads we aren't interested in anyway. What the heck? So, sure, throw in an ad and knock another 50 cents off my cost... I can take it. |

Mayhap in the US, but the UK still maintains a sensible and welcome amount of ad-free viewing (thank god) .... |

I am against having adds anywhere but that does not mean I would not ..tolerate them... We've had adds here at MR for a certain period. Never heard complaints of any kind and I finally got used to them, and got to be fascinated by the accuracy of their targeting. After a while I made a point at every thread to look at them, just for the fun of admiring that accuracy.
As long as those adds do not break the flow (pee break) of reading, the eye becomes trained to skip them altogether. Most of the ebooks I read are formated as an HTML where you can skip to a TOC and then directly to an actual chapter. Which can all be done without ever seing an add. A DVD command locked type of advertizing is obnoxious to say the least and I would be firmly opposed to any such concept in a 'one story' ebook. |

Actually, I have seen ads pop up between individual entries here... say, one or two entries down. I just ignore them. |

I'd buy them in a red hot minute if ads reduced prices.

I'd like to voice I would not mind if there where adds in the media so long as the price was driven down. Ads already exist in Magazines, news papers, blogs, mobileread, and most novels (these are the clever ones that read -- "if you like this author's books try these other titles..." =X= |
