Yeah? Then maybe they'd have considered that *some* customers regularly find themselves where Whispernet might not work and there's no computer handy-dandy nearby!

I'll never get this type of argument.

If you live in the middle of nowhere and don't have a computer, you are not Amazon's target customer. In fact, that person has probably never heard of the Kindle or maybe even Amazon.

You may be a "real" reader but Amazon wants people who will actually buy books from their store, not carry around 2,000+ books on multiple SD cards. What is the draw of having that many books on hand? Do you bounce around from book to book depending on how you feel?

Also about the Cybook Gen3, Bookeen doesn't have to worry about trying to fit wireless gear onto their unit. Getting the Kindle from 0.8" to 0.36" is impressive.

^Perhaps because some of us juggle our time between very remote locations and being close to computers? I quite often spend weeks at a time away from computers and am sometimes lucky to even be around power and water. This is one of the things that makes the Kindle ideal for me.

I kinda have to agree with Sporadic on this one.

If you look at the NEW wireless coverage area it is much larger than before. I would estimate that 97% of the population is covered.

You cannot expect Amazon or any company to provide 100% area coverage over the entire U.S. without any connection fee.

Just make sure you have what you want loaded before traveling to BFE.

The Squaretrade warranty with ADH is $75. Use the coupon code thirty30 and get it for about $52 for 3 years vs the Service Net 2 year.

I agree. I only keep the books I haven't read on my Kindle, usually 10 to 20 out of 100's I have backed up on my computer. I did use the SD card for audiobooks, but I only have 1 or 2 on it at a time so the lack of SD won't bother me. The internal memory has been increased from 200 mb to 2 gb, that should be sufficient for most people.

Nice avatar.

Thats not the point. The point is....they gave me the option with Kindle 1, to load as many sd cards as I wanted....then took it away, added what they considered enough internal memory, and said "thats enough"

THATS the point.

I totally agree with Desertgrandma. I never thought of using multiple SD cards to compensate for the lack of category folders but I did use my SD card to old many Audible books. Since there is no OTA support today for Audible books, I needed to take the time to copy many books to a SD cards to take on vacation.

It was a very bad and insensitive decision of Kindle to eliminate SD cards in their new device, IMO. I guess they expect those of us who need SD cards to never upgrade to V2. As long as they continue to support V1, that is not a problem.

But if I get gift certificates to Amazon and more reward certificates and manage to get to a CoinStar to turn in a bunch of change (which may take awhile with my broken right arm) I may still get the new K2 if the reports of it are super duper -- otherwise I will wait for K3 I guess.
I went one step further. I canceled my order because as much as I'd like the text-to-speech feature, I don't want to give up carrying my books on an SD card. I don't know how often this device will need to be reset and I dread the prospects of re-downloading 1.5 GB of material.

I think there will be a K3 with SD cards. They may need to add protection to the card so that it can only be used with a specific registered Kindle but I think the outcry and lack of upgrades will convince Kindle to rethink their bad decision.

i have had my Kindle 1 since May. I have NEVER needed to reset it. Even still, reseting the device does NOT remove any books from memory. It is just like rebooting your compurer. You don't loose everything on your hard drive when you re-boot your computer, do you?

I think it is just as likely for the data on the SD card to get corrupeted or deleted as it is the main memory. Actually, the MAIN reason people loose data is not hard ware failure but user error.

Keep your books on a PC and transfer them over in the unlikely even that they somehow get removed from your Kindle. Or, redownload them from the Amazon media library, or feedbooks or whereever you got them in the first place. Lets face it, most of the sources we get our books from retain those books incase we ever need to d/l them again.

BOb,
There are different kinds of resets and some resets do wipe out the memory of devices.
Per Kindle support, I've reset my device and only had content which was on my SD card. It wasn't a big deal since over 90% of my reading content is on my SD card.

I also zip and backup my SD cards regularly and only restore them when I upgrade to a larger SD card.

I totally understand those who do not need SD cards but those who have maximized the use of cards on their Kindle are disappointed that they will not be able to take advantage of the latest and greatest features of the V2.

I think you are taking it too personally. Amazon is a business. They decided that a smaller form was more important to potential customers then a SD slot or a user-replaceable battery. I'm sure that the decision to axe the SD slot was much easier to make once they decided to bump up the internal memory so much.
