You're kidding! Page 16 of the "about your Kindle" guide (paper version) states to turn off the Kindle before inserting card.

I'm not planning on purchasing a K2. I just don't have the money for it at present. Plu, I'm waiting to see what happens with screens larger than 6". Now if I win a K2 from MR, I'd happily accept it and would even use it.

Huh... never did it, never had a problem. What does "power down" mean? The on off switch? Does that really "power down" the thing.

But still... aren't we a little melodramatic to say that turning it off, removing the back cover inserting/changing the SD card and "reversing the process" is so onerous. What are we talking about here, a minute or two?

Sure you do -- it's called a trade-in. Your older car has residual value and the dealer is willing to take it off your hands if you'll buy the new model. Then he turns around and sells the car he bought from you for a profit.

The trick is -- Amazon isn't offering a trade-in. Instead, you have to find a place to sell your old Kindle for yourself. Sony offered a trade-up option to owners of the PRS-500 to purchase a PRS-505, but many found that selling their older device themselves resulted in a better price than Sony was offering.

While it might have been nice for Amazon to offer a trade-in, it wouldn't really incite me to buy another one anyway.

If I sell my Kindle 1 (which to me is the same as Amazon offering an upgrade deal), I'd still add the cost of a new cover , extended warranty, as well.

So I am going to keep my Kindle 1...I still have 5 months on the Amazon warranty and another 2 years from square trade after that. If my Kindle dies in that time, then I can upgrade for small money and until then it does what I need it too.
Me too. If I need/want an additional Kindle, of course it will be a K2. (And then I can get that lovely Jade Green Cover from M-Edge.

I've never owned an eBook reader before, but when the husband offered to buy me one for my birthday rather than ship umpteen thousand pounds of books from the States to South Korea when we move there this summer I agreed. I won't be able to use the Whispernet after we become expats, but as long as I can download new books onto the Kindle from my laptop I'm happy.

Holy crap, apologies to anyone who saw that before I edited. Apparently my cat sat on my laptop at some point before I posted.

OH.........no problem then.......I thought we were being invaded there for a minute.

Welcome to MobileRead, CrCross.

Be sure and take advantage of the outstanding books uploaded here for you as well. You'll want the .prc format.

You have a cat? You'll fit in nicely.......

Which is to say, you want the mobipocket format. Sometimes the extension is .mobi or .prc

Ok, but if I recall the thread here that isn't what people were looking for. They were looking for a break just because they were previous customers.

Amazon is offering the market place for to sell your K1... so it is pretty close to a trade in.

It's not really a requirement. The whole idea behind powering down the device is to ensure nothing is being read/written to the card when you pull it out. That can lead to data corruption and eventually a bad card.

That's why in you have the option to "eject" a flash drive from your operating system without actually pulling it out. In the majority of cases, however, you're perfectly fine just pulling it out.

You can actually get it with kindle 1. They offer this color for the executive jacket in leather for both kindles.

No, I am not going to preorder simply because I plan on winning one in the Mobileread giveaway. I'm just waiting now to be notified.
