In the case of mobile phones, you may be able to remove the front cover to access the top layer that is right before the actual LCD screen. Try it.

It's hard to imagine a company like Sony making a screen that isn't airtight. If it wasn't, I'm sure we would all have dust in our screens. Me thinks .

Unhappy Oh noooooooooooooooooo! dreaded dust spots on my PRS700

OH Noooooooooo: Just noticed 3 dust spots last night while reading with the sidelight on in the dark. One bright one and two smaller ones, near centre top of screen. Reminds me of a constellation of stars in the sky.

My PRS700 is only read in bed and has only travelled to the PC, a distance of about 2 metres.

I'll report to Sony support to get it on record.

Not sure if I can get a photo in the dark.

I have subscribed to this thread from the start but am now going to re-read through it again.

I like my 700, may take it directly to the sonystyle store and see what my options are.

WDE.

Actually they are easy to deal with in that way. As long as you have the orignial invoice they will be happy to help. Just don't expect a speedy return of your device.

I sent an email to sony support first, and got a quick reply as follows:

Quote:
Thank you for contacting Sony Support.

I'm sorry for the difficulty you're experiencing with the Sony Reader as there are dust particles inside the screen. Based on the information you've provided, it appears that the unit requires service. You can obtain the location and contact for your nearest Sony Authorized Service Center on our website at:

http://www.sony.ca/view/servicelocator.htm

Thank you for your time.

Sony of Canada, Ltd.
Should I call the Coquitlam Depot, or take it to one of these suggested service places, that have probably never seen an eBook reader before?

WDE.

@Wetdogeared: Those dust spots are NOTHING. I would just take it to the depot, doesn't matter if they have never seen a reader before they will look at the screen and put it in a bit ziplock bag and give you a reciept.

Just received my Prs-700 which was very *gently* used for a month. I'm really happy to say that there aren't any dust spots! Keeping my fingers crossed and going to knock on a whole cord of wood

I've arranged for the second return of my 700 today. Over ~1.5 months the dust became worse than it was on my first reader. The representative I spoke with said that this issue hasn't been widely reported, so apparently I just have some really bad luck. I was very careful to really baby this unit, so I was surprised it ended up being worse.

I'm 99% sure the dust is coming in through the seam between the aluminum and gray bezel. When my replacement arrived, there was some slight condensation along the top edge inside the screen. In the attached picture, you can clearly see the light through the top seam and that the dust mainly accumulates along the top.

I have a few more .lrx files to finish, so I'll see how #3 treats me. Either way, I think I'm going to cut my losses when I finish and make a flea market post.
