The Dual mobi is ONLY for distribution to retailers other than Amazon selling to Kindles, but most Kindle owners would want the epub now, for Send to Kindle, as long as it's DRM free. You can't use the mobi from Kindle Preview to publish on Amazon. You use the epub! Clue is in the name. The Previewer is for you alone to preview (and it's not that great at it). |

Then check the dual mobi (that's for distribution to not-Amazon for Kindle downloads) on an Android Kindle App and an actual Kindle that is gen 3 or later with up to date firmware (but not the Colorsoft or Scribe). Compare default and Publisher modes on the Kindle, and you can't force the user or automatically use publisher mode unless maybe it's KFX. Note that only Amazon can deliver KFX, and you can't upload KFX, mobi or azw3 for reflowable ebooks to Amazon, only sensibly epub, even if doc/docx is still allowed.
Note the Fire (which was called a Kindle Fire originally) isn't a Kindle and runs a custom Android and pre-installed custom Kindle App. Apple iOS users are best with the epub version, not either Apple Books or the Kindle App, but you can't tell the iOS users what to do. Thank you for clarifying!
When I converted with Calibre Kindle didn't see included fonts - there was no option for publisher font so mobi looked different (worse) than epub. But now I see I missed additional settings for output file and I had "old" mobi set. ![]() Thank you! ![]() |

The azw3/kf8, or Calibre Dual Mobi (not Previewer) with Publisher selected on an actual Kindle (K3 or later, not DGX) is more similar to epub2 than KFX is to epub2 or epub3. Some epub3 works.
Oddly not all eink kindles do images identically, depending on how the image is specified. It's more subtle than the 3 resolutions of 167 dpi, <something more> and the 300 dpi on Voyage/Paperwhite3/Oasis1 and later. The Kindle Basic models used 167 dpi for some time after the Voyage/Paperwhite3/Oasis1 (first 300 dpi models). |
