I have not made any statements of facts. I merely expressed an opinion. You were the one who said his statements are facts, not opinions. If you had said that in your opinion the current Oasis is a failure, then this discussion would have ended right there. Instead you said that it's a fact. Well, it isn't and you have not proven anything of the sort.
Quote:
But I have explained the Oasis concept to you.
There is no "Oasis concept". There was the concept for the Oasis 1, and there is the concept for the Oasis 2/3. Why do you insist they should be the same?
Quote:
I have given you the facts, that made the original Oasis particulary lightweight and ergonomic.
I have given you the facts, why the Oasis 2/3 does not fulfill this concept anymore.
Why should the Oasis 2 fulfill the concept of the Oasis 1? It's not the same device, except in name. It fulfills a different concept. All you're saying is that the Oasis 2/3 is a failure because it's different from the Oasis 1. And that's not a fact, but an opinion.
Quote:
No, that is not what I have said.
I did not say that it cannot be comfortable to hold and I did not say, that people should or cannot like it.

I said, that it lost almost everything, that once made it particulary ergonomic. (Again, see previous posts...)
That still doesn't make it a failure. It lost something (exceedingly light weight) and it gained something (larger screen and better battery). There are always trade-offs. I, for one, prefer the Oasis 2/3 to the Oasis 1 (which I sold after buying the Oasis 2). So do many others, and have done so for the past 4 years. Amazon would hardly have kept a failed device in production for 4 years.

I'm not saying they're certainly not going to discontinue it; they may, but not for the reasons you stated. The main reason is likely to be too high a price, which resulted in too few sales. Nothing to do with concepts or ergonomics.

Note that it's an opinion, not a fact. I don't know what Amazon is going to do or why; and neither do you.

OK, folks, time to let it go. There’s nothing new being said here and continued restating of a position serves no purpose at all. Let’s go back to topic, actual news and commentary.

Even there... I have RSI severe enough that I can't use conventional keyboards for more than a minute or two without pain and have to read most trade paperbacks and hardbacks flat on a table because I can't lift them for very long. But even for me, the Oasis 2 and 3 are (just) light enough to hold for long periods without trouble -- the saving grace being that you can easily move them from hand to hand. The Oasis 1 was so light I could hold it in one hand indefinitely, but it was also *so* light that it could easily fly out of my hand from the jolts of, say, walking, and go crashing to the ground (getting a little more damaged every time).

So... possibly the v1 was *too* light? With a skin to cover the terrible metal back, the Oasis v3 is definitely ergonomic from my perspective (oh, also, don't forget the primary definition of "ergonomic": "looks different and costs a lot more". The Oasis certainly satisfies *that* ;} )

Unless your fingers are unusually greasy, you won't "smudge up the screen". An eInk screen is nothing like the screen on a phone or tablet. I've been using a touch screen eInk Reader for about 11 years. So what I am saying comes from experience.

My guess is that the Oasis is just too expensive.

Personally, I find Readers nicer to hold when they are in a case. I've been using a Reader since I got the Sony Reader PRS-500 in late 2006/early 2007 (not exactly sure when I got it). That's about 14/15 years. So I'm talking from experience.

The battery case of the Oasis 1 was disaster. It made the Oasis really heavy and clunky and not at all nice to hold.

Say, does anyone know if there is a way to disable screen touch like on the Oasis 3 - without any kind of future jailbreak involved/contemplated? I absolutely love this feature.

(I realize there are no buttons on the new Paperwhite, so my question is probably a 'no', unless there is the ability for the firmware developers to assign an area as Active to enable/disable this kind of feature.)

Unless they changed it with the latest software upgrade, there was a disable touch screen feature. I've traded in my PW4 for the new one, so I can't confirm it at the moment.

Yes, you will, if your fingers are not completely dry all the time. And there are many people whose fingers aren't. Many people even have fingers and hands that tend to always sweat a little.

I also speak from experience, having used ereaders for 10 years, and having fingers that aren't particularly dry and sometimes sweat (yes, even in winter).

TL;DR People are different and so are their fingers.

I just dug out my Paperwhite 4. Inside a book, touch the three dots on the upper right and Disable Touchscreen is in the drop down menu. My Paperwhite is on version 5.13.6.

But... *you yourself* just said that the point of the Oasis was that it's lightweight, and that making the Oasis 2 less lightweight proved it was a failure! I don't entirely agree, but... apparently your own words don't count when you can make a different point that requires you to argue in the opposite direction.

But... the Oasis 2 and 3 are much heavier with either of their cases on than the Oasis 1 is with it off (heavy enough that I only read my Oasis 3 with the case on when I absolutely must), yet you just said the weight of the case is unimportant?! You can't have it both ways. You certainly can't have it both ways in the same post.
