But, for Forma users who are using Dropbox, there is a small chance of a problem.

I don't believe there will be a problem. At the worst, I think calibre won't show books that have been downloaded from Dropbox. Or, the metadata shown might not be correct. At the moment, I don't have access to a Forma to test this. And, I'm not a Dropbox user.
On my recovered Forma, the books that are downloaded from Dropbox show up in .kobo\dropbox. The three books that matched books in my calibre library that had been sent to the Forma showed as having 2 books while another 4 that weren't in calibre only showed in the device view. When I did a metadata update, the matching books now show the series & synopsis when I check the details. I must admit that I created a Dropbox account just to play with this feature.

Affiliate availability question

Fun fact: There are now 5 active versions between the 6 main affiliates (see below).
Anybody has a clue why the affiliates seem to be getting the latest upgrades sooner than models bought directly from Kobo? I've been refreshing my Kobo-bought Forma for the last week or so, looking for 4.17 and not understanding why it never showed up.

Are there any possible downsides to manually changing my model's affiliate details?

I believe that Kobo is deliberately choosing some smaller affiliates to roll the updates out to first. That way they can get some feedback before sending it to larger groups. They have pulled firmware fairly quickly when problems were found. The first 4.17.x was an example. There is also some dependency in location, though I don't think that is as important as it once was.

The only risk is if you don't want the firmware version that is being rolled out. Choosing one of the later affiliates means you aren't a crash test dummy And in cases of unusually fast releases, you might bypass the earlier versions.

Yeah, that's what I imagined too, they might be testing it before broadly deploying it. I guess I'll wait until it's properly released, maybe Calibre will have been updated by then too to support the new features.

My Clara from Walmart was last synced last night and is still on the May 2019 version.

Why bother waiting for affiliate to get an update, update it manually.

Because there’s a small chance that if you grab the wrong update zip you could brick your kobo. Yes it’s small and as long as you’re even moderately careful it shouldn’t happen. But some people prefer to avoid the risk.

Quick question for the people with a Forma (or, possibly, other devices using an eMMC for internal storage): have you managed to reproduce the "FAT32 dirty bit is set" issue on this FW?

I haven't played much with it on my end, but, so far, so good... .

I hope you're right! I'm just about to patch my own day-to-day devices. If it's fixed I should know soon enough. My Forma and ClaraHD need no encouragement to throw up that annoying Windows pop-up.

Has anyone else noticed that pressing the little black dot to get back to a previous location sometimes reboots the reader? I'm reading a nonfiction book with a ton of footnotes, and the reader seems to reboot about once every 5 or 6 times. I'm trying to track it down, because sometimes I get a popup footnote but sometimes I get taken to the page with the footnote on it and have to press the black dot to get back, and I haven't figured out why there is a difference. I suspect the book may be at fault, so I'm just checking here first to see if anyone else is experiencing this. (I use the Kobo Extended driver to send kepubs to the reader on the fly.)

Update: On my lunch break I synced my Clara to get to a new library book I had checked out on my phone, and I received the update.

If by this you mean that the host wants to check the filesystem on connect even though it was safely ejected? Yes, I did, and I consistently can.

Edit: or not. That may have been on the 4.15.whatever firmware I used to be on because it's not happening now.
