![]() Anyone have any thoughts on what appear to be spikes in the WiFi traffic? @brent63 - if you want another layer of real time protection you could try Malwarebytes (MWB) Pro - it is designed to run alongside other anti-malware products such as Defender. I run both, and they've both found, blocked things etc that the other one hasn't. The only thing i have ever had to exclude from either was a weather gadget from MWB - they fixed that within a couple of days of me posting the 'false alarm' message. I have no special interest in MWB, other than that of a long time user, ditto MS. BR |

There shouldn't be any network activity from Sigil itself outside of the update checker at launch time occasionally. Defender DOES have a cloud-based aspect to it's protection, though. I'd be tempted to add Sigil's program directory and preference directory to Defender's exclusion list and see if the spikes in network activity go away.

Or a web, twitter etc client - I recall Firefox variants would bring other programs to their knees - Waterfox and Pale Moon.

I was hanging onto Gecko based firefox because I liked (and still miss) some extensions - but I got sick of killing firefox, in order to use other programs. So I'm wondering what other programs are running alongside Sigil, that is programs started from desktop shortcuts, file managers, taskbar etc. BR |

I will take all of your antivirus advice under advisement.
I'm still using 9.13 and have switched to my own epub file. I have also configured it to make the way I had 9.10 set up. (see attached) I did over write my ini files. I have noticed that the preview window will stop tracking where my cursor is in the code view area. when this happens I have to save and close Sigil. I had just closed sigil and reopened my file. I noticed that when ever I typed a word the preview file would go blank and then reappear quickly. In my typing I misspelled a word so I right on it to change the word. the preview window goes to the top of the file and does not return to any place I put my cursor in the code view. Any ideas why? Not sure if why not tracking each other but can explain that the Preview Window is like an automatically reloaded web browser. When it detects changes in CodeView editing it will grab a copy of what it can from the CodeView editor and try to display it. This happens once changes are done or based on a timer so that preview will not keep old/stale info long.
Preview goes to parent of where you are in CodeView. So if you are creating a new tag inside of the body tag then it will grab its parent (the body tag and move there - top of page since body tag is parent. If you are inside another tag editing text it will go to the parent of the text which is typically the p tag. So move your CodeView cursor to be inside a tag other than the body tag and it should nicely reposition itself after a short delay. Please try that. |

I have been using 9.13 even after the preview stopped tracking my location in code view. I was cutting and pasting the dropcase in my files, I also changed Split Markers to an image.
Tracking in code view than started to get extremely slow. so much the I would type a word and wait for it to appear. I closed the preview window and the tracking in codeview became spot on, no delay. This morning I notice that <i>italic</i> is not showing in either Preview or Book view. Seriously thinking of reverting back to Sigil 9.10. Brent |

You're saying that immediately after starting Sigil, italics are not rendering in Preview? Forget Book View, no one should be using Book View if Preview is open. Choose one or the other.

Editing again in Code View, so I turned on Preview. Immediately I started getting slow responses of my cursor while editing. Turned off preview, again tracking fine, but I have to be careful as I am looking certain tags to make changes after those tags only.

Then please consider closing Sigil instead. I'm sorry, but I'm simply not going to spend a lot of my limited time trying to find out why Sigil can't run for days on end without eventually bogging down. Especially with the latest code-security nightmare scenarios, obstacles, pitfalls and bad updates that Windows 10 has chosen to inflict on developers (and users). If Sigil 0.9.10 will let you do what you want with no problems, then that's probably the version you should stick with for now. I appreciate your effort to make 0.9.13 work for you, but it's quite possible that newer versions of Sigil just aren't going to work well for those who want to use Sigil as a continuously-running service, rather than a program that is intended to be frequently opened and closed. |

And if you turn off Preview what--exactly--is "again tracking fine"? There is no synchronization to be done with Preview closed. Last edited by DiapDealer; 04-04-2019 at 10:04 AM. |

What font or fonts are you using? Some fonts are broken when used with Qt. Not many but there are a few. Are you embedding fonts?
Please open the Inspector widget at the bottom of Preview and open the html tree and verify that your "i" tag is being parsed properly. That tree shows exactly how your Code is being parsed and what css is active, etc. Please let us know what you find. Also fwiw, I now think that these slowdowns are related to a specific kernel bug or library in Windows 10. What exact Windows 10 update are you using and what exact build number? According to a Google researcher, there are slowdowns and memory leaks associated with a Windows 10 security feature called Control Flow Guard that actually never frees memory in processes that open a large number of threads with different starting locations (such as the chrome browser or Sigil). This can be especially troublesome on machines with lower amounts of memory as the only way to get the memory and speed back is to restart Windows. Restarting the impacted program will not help. The slowdown part has been fixed in a recent Windows build. According to Google researchers Microsoft still hasn't fixed the lack of memory being freed even when an app exits (ie worse than a leak which is freed when a program exits). The newer Qt webkits use multiple threads to walk the javascript stack to garbage collect, multiple threads to load resources (images, fonts, etc) and even multiple threads to run the gui. On my Mac, I once counted 43 different threads active when launching Sigil with a large book. Part of the reason for the large number of threads is that my cpu has 4 actual cores and therefore 8 logical hypercores. Last edited by KevinH; 04-04-2019 at 10:09 AM. |

I have 4 gig of ram, can max it out to eight, but this is the only program showing any slowdown.
