I think I would like the idea of a discrete progression bar, or even the same dots they use on the list view.
Other than that, any feedback on how this updates run on devices? I've read the page turn is faster on the last Oasis. I wonder if other models are impacted. |

The only difference I've noticed with the new update is better battery life. I probably wouldn't notice faster page turns. Barry |

Now if Amazon used ADE style page numbers or page numbers where each page was one screen., you would eventually get used to them and have an idea how long the book is and then the % would be of more use. However, not have any indication how far along you are can be a good thing. When you know how far along you are, you can know certain things will soon happen (depending ont he type of book being read). Last edited by JSWolf; 02-19-2019 at 05:03 PM. |

Well, since we're talking preferences, I'm for word count along with percentage finished l. It shows both the real length of the book and how much you've read. That seems about the most accurate thing out there. I'm quite used to understanding book length in terms of word count and I'm sure those who aren't, would be soon enough.

Now I use pages or time left in book. Neither of them is as satisfying as the progress bar though. Whenever I take out my basic with buttons to charge it I go and read on it just so I can experience the progress bar and the nice screen with super contrast. Daytime only of course now with my eyes. And those are also still my preferred buttons on the side too. Lately I been having issues again with time left in book not sticking. It used to work always for my, until a few updates ago. Was always spot on. Now I keep having to reset it no matter what type of book I read. No rhyme or reason to it. And many books for some reason do not have a page number. Considering that having anything down there you always have at least 2 items, the progress bar wouldn't fill out anymore than that really. |

Your method of page number is one screen would only be useful for percentage purposes (maybe). It's otherwise confusing to say I'm on page 57, because that will also depend on your font, font size, boldness, margins, and line spacing. Someone else's page 57 may be in a drastically different location. Or if I decide 1/4 of the way through to change any page layout settings. It's why locations are still a good idea (I believe ADE is similar). They are completely static from one Kindle Book to the next and they are far more exact at matching than a book's page numbers. Plays use line number, for instance, so no matter the edition the exact location can be found. The once screen equals one page also doesn't account for indexes, appendices, preview chapters of the next book, afterwords, etc. That's a problem with any book really. A regular book might suddenly conclude because there's a lot of extra material at the end. Ultimately, if I'm on page 150 of 300 I have a good idea how much longer the book is going to take me to read (Time Left has been largely useless to me). I sort of miss the permanent location bar, but the one that appears in Page Flip view helps me a little. |

I think it's worth distinguishing between methods useful for reading and methods useful for studying. I mostly read novels and even when I read non-fiction I rarely have to look up references from a paper copy. Actually I don't think I've done that in the past quarter century. There was a time when I did but that was a long, long time ago.
The obvious answer is something like a reading mode and a study mode, or a reading version and a study version, or some such. In the Kindle that might be added to the theme setting. Barry |
