Laying on my right side with the Forma in my right hand it displays correctly, I flipped it over so that I was holding it in my left hand (buttons under my left thumb now) still laying on my right side and the screen rotated correctly (this is with it set to rotation locked on portrait), tried it on my left side and it took it a bit longer to flip the screen after swapping from left to right hand but it still worked, the screen was in the correct orientation for reading.

If you leave the setting on Auto-Rotate it switches to landscape when you lay on your side, so you need to lock it to portrait.

Thank you! Yes that is exactly what I meant. How odd/clever/unexpected that it would work... since lying on your left side holding in your left hand (buttons nearest the floor, to the left of the bottom of the screen) would give a different "bottom of screen"-side than lying on your right side holding in your right hand (buttons nearest the floor again, but to the right of the bottom of the screen)...

Kudos to Kobo for figuring out how to solve that accelerometer puzzle.

Never had any issue with the Oasis in this regard either. But even laying on my side, I don't hold it with buttons perfectly horizontal. The top side is still tipped up a bit more than the bottom end. And you can always tip it up a bit more than back down after it flips. Can only see a problem if you're trying to read when you yourself are upside down.

Yes. It seems to work fine with the few books I've tried. Even so, I have still decided to use the patch for now, as it seems to work fine either way.

Thanks, guys. I'll hold on to my KA1 at least a while longer. (Buttons don't interest me.)

I fetched my pre-ordered Forma from Fnac (in Paris) yesterday evening - Kobo delivered one day late. I'm still loading my 4000 books, but I've started using it and am very pleased.

I haven't yet applied patches, but the screen quality is such that I can do without the fonts one; it is much better than the 3 successive Ones I've gone through.

I've read the comments about the "defective" screen, but I don't agree: all the ereaders I know had some sort of halo (often cones) along the leds side but Forma's doesn't bother me. I prefer the even side-line to cones and it is very faint, if even noticeable, in my normal reading conditions (I never read in total darkness). Anyway, it isn't more noticeable than the shadow from the slightly raised bevels in the other Kobos I've used these past years, and the build of Forma means there are no bevels to cast shadows. In most paper books I've read, there is also some shadowing along the central parting. It might be annoying for full-screen readers, but I want margins, header and footer (I hate mass market paperbacks with next to no margins).

I've tried a couple of PDFs, and it is much more pleasant than it ever was, and I will be able to read books I'd given up on with the One. The landscape mode didn't work as described here, but my sample is very small. I did use the landscape mode on a very specific kepub where it is much better than portrait.

PS: I had brought the One to Fnac for recycling since I was going there and was pleasantly surprised when they gave me a 66€ coupon to be used in their shops within a year.

I think the last time I had cones was with the first Paperwhite... the 2015 Paperwhite I had, the Voyage and the Oasis 2 had very even lighting.

I have the 2017 Paperwhite, and the cones at the bottom are very evident. But I also have a Kobo H2O (1st edition) and its screen lighting is perfect, consistent right across the face, at any brightness.

Big difference in price, yes, but quality lighting is possible, if you're lucky in the particular device you get.

I understand you, that's why I'm with koreader and not nickel. With koreader you can have time and more useful info all the time (you choose what you want to see).

With nickel, you can't do this.

Sorry, but it isn't true.

KA1 has about half battery life of H2O. I know, you mentioned HD, I don't know about it, but KA1 works for me about 5-7 days, H2O worked (or, still works, but I know use KA1 mainly) 10-14.

So, yes, I can live with 5-7 days reading time, but it still is true, battery last about half of H2O's one.

It's not just "haters", it is a hard fact. Different things is, does it impacts you too much, or you can accept it and use device with more frequent charging.
