Amazon having access to Goodreads data (and obviously using it) one would expect to have read books (= added to "read" shelf on Goodreads; BUT not bought on Kindle Store) excluded from "Recommended for you" section...

It's thumbnails to be truthful that takes up so much space. It generate every thumbnail of every book in the cloud. It's bad programming. On the early Kindle Fires this was a huge problem because there was only 1GB of space for them. They did something after many users reported the issue to where the newer Fires don't have this problem.

I was hoping this to be fixed in the new app as well. My Kindle app data on my Fire is only 800MB compared to Android 2.23GB that does not include the new cache which gets bigger with each browse of recommendations.

I think they must do that. I installed the new update on my older phone and even though I have a large Kindle library (1034 books) it's just taking 421 meg on it.

I plan to uninstall and re-install the Kindle app on my current phone but I haven't done that yet. It's currently using 2.46 gig. My guess is it'll be greatly reduced.

I wonder if what happens is that as time goes by each new book I buy sends a thumbnail to the app so it builds up over time. The one that has only 421 meg has only had a Kindle app on it for a few weeks.

I'll know more in a couple of days.

the new reader app showed up on my Fire HDX tablet - i noticed mainly because it reset all my preference back to defaults ( luckily there are no that many to have to redo ) , and i think it also removed the books on device.
to continue reading one I had to redownoad it, but it did at least remember my last page

I only keep a few books on device, but if it does delete the local records then anyone hoarding 1000s of books on device will be cross ?

the latest one - the one that has the " for you" tab next to the home tab

i was previously using the green background for reading kindle books - that had changed back to white, and the margin , text sizes etc has gone to some default values. And I am pretty sure that no books were marked as " on device"

I also noticed a new version of the Kindle app on my samsung tablet but have not examined that closely - just spotted the changed icon

ps - same outome on both my amazon (Fire HDX) and my samsung (Tab s) tablets
Kindle app auto updated on both - icon changed - "lost" my on-device amazon books", all app preferences changed back to defaults "the 1st time around" tips for how to use the app re-appeared... it appears to have done a silent uninstall then reinstall ?

curious to know if anyone with hundreds of downloaded books is being affected like this and if they have complained ?

Both my iPhone and iPad updated the Kindle App to 6.0.1 yesterday.

Okay no update. Do you have Google Play installed? If so do you have auto updates disabled? If not Play probably updated the app which I wouldn't advise as it's not optimized for the Fire but I know some do use Play updates on their Fire components.

My new Kindle app is 8.0.0.68. I suspect it isn't an "update" of the old app but rather a new app. I downloaded it from Google Play Store.

*sigh* the app on my Alcatel Android phone got the update this morning. Then I had to uninstall and reinstall it because it wouldn't open at all. Now I have to re-download the 6 books I had in it before. I do like the new app much better. Hopefully it will continue to work. I find it odd that the audio companions are not showing int he app, not even the little icon on the corner of the book cover.

Spoke too soon. The Audible things are there now.

I think it was still syncing.

If the app works (I could rarely even open the old one on my phone) it will be a great way to read my KU books.

It works great now but as I earlier said I'd do a clean install which I think you said you did. It feels odd to be able to actually use my Kindle app. It's been a huge mass of wasted space for so long.
