Another reason why a universal format such as ePub is a good thing.

Speaking of which, I've got an EPUB version of Neptune Crossing I finished most of yesterday while my home Internet was down. **crosses fingers that it's back up when I get home this evening.** I'm doing a final read-through to make sure everything is consistent, then I'll send it on up to Jeffery.

The problem with a universal format, however, is for programs that use their own formats, the universal format is only as good as the conversion program used to convert that format into that program's own format.

Format conversion is somewhat iffy at the best of times. I'm still annoyed about Stanza throwing out all text formatting when it makes its own ePub files.

True, but for e-books to move forward, there has to be a common, universal "starting point", which ideally is also the end-point. EPUB is the closest we have. We need to be removing barriers, real or imagined. Publishers shouldn't have to pick which of 5 different formats they'll produce. They should produce plain-vanilla EPUB and hand that over to booksellers. If the bookseller needs to add DRM, they can. If they need to convert to another format, let the onus be upon them (or savvy end users).

Speaking of formats, the Sony LRF is now up, thanks to Jon. The Mobipocket with table of contents and proper artist credit is now up, thanks to Dennis. And...am I forgetting any? The PDB now has a table of contents, thanks to Robo. (My head is starting to spin. I'm having trouble remembering who is helping me with which format, and which new versions have come in.)

Just for the fun of it, here is a summary of my downloads per format to date:

PDF - 1522
PRC - 525
html - 303
PDF2 - 220 (recent addition--optim. for PDA)
RTF - 145
PDB - 123
LRF - just put up

Caveat: I have no way to track repeated downloads, so no doubt some of the numbers are inflated, in terms of persons downloading.

PDF has been way out front from the start, but PRC has been closing the gap somewhat.

I'll send you the no margin edition later today and you can choose what to do with it.

Why no .lit version? Well, at some point, I just threw up my hands and said, I can't keep doing this forever. New book to write, other books to convert, life to live, etc. I was partly guided by a list of format popularity that I saw somewhere--manybooks, maybe? And indeed, my downloads seem to follow that pattern: pdf by far the most popular, followed by prc, then html, then pdb and rtf. And soon, we'll see about lrf.
Would you like a Mobipocket (PRC) with ToC & Cover page? I can easily do it.

Unfortunately, I think you posted the wrong version. I just grabbed it and it isn't showing the ToC, though the cover is present. I'll resend in a few minutes. Please take down the one you have.

I downloaded it a little while before you posted, and got the TOC fine.

It works for you? Curiouser and curiouser. The copy I grabbed from Jeff's site does not display the ToC, in Mobi Reader on the desktop or on my PDA.

The copy I emailed him does. There is a version mismatch somewhere.

EDIT: and after downloading again and first removing the book from the desktop reader library, then importing, I get what appears to be the correct copy. Sheesh...

Jeff, I just tried to download the Sony version and received a page not found error. If I try to download the Mobi version, there is no problem.
