Thanks for the suggestion. Maybe I'll try.
In the meantime, trying to give that great hardware a last chance to cope with its poor software, so: supposing I do a factory reset, does it revert to the firmware it first came up with? Or, does it keep the latest one that was flashed? Also: if prior to the reset, I back up books and database through Calibre, can I then restore it post-reset and find everything as it was? Thanks. |

Using Calibre you then then resend all your books to the reader - so yes, back them up on Calibre before the reset and they will be as they were. Last edited by Willa; 10-14-2016 at 04:32 PM. Reason: clarity |

Thanks. The books are not really the problem, you can sideload them again indeed, I was more curious about the database, that stores the collection, reading progress and so on.

All that on the Aura ONE will be wiped.

I know the process, I simply was wondering, since in one of the Kobo plugins for Calibre, there is a "backup database" option, if restoring that post-reset would allow to bring back progress and so on.
Thx again. |

I asked a similar question in this thread. Quote:
You should also check the version number in the device information. I know I have so many files named KoboRoot.tgz that I sometimes get confused. Thus for mods we put the name of the mod and even the version number in there, even if it means the additional step of having to rename the file after copying it over. It's hard to support anyone in this forum (where everyone can see what everyone else is writing, short of private messages), usually because both sides are unclear / keep holding information back / don't answer questions / talk at crosspurposes. If it's still a problem with the firmware, exchanging the device won't help and all you can do is wait (or find a workaround like turning off all wifi and syncs). On my H2O, so far no drain issues with 4.1.7729 (but it only happened every few days with 4.0). I caught it syncing once unwanted [it's disabled in the settings and all] after opening collections. Still shows the old sync date too but it was spinning and displays sync finished at the top and everything. Oh well. |

I see what you're getting at, indeed flashing firmware can fail, but I let it be known to them that it correctly installed, and it did, since the version is correct, and finished books do now work in the reading progress stats.
I'll see what it gives with a reset, before deciding to let it go. |

You still didn't answer the question but I give up at this point. (It might not even matter.)

- Manually install the update again. - Sign-out and back. This resets a lot of things. It rebuilds the database, configuration and other things. This includes configuration on the hidden root partition. One of those is the WiFi setup. Anyone having problems with WiFi SSIDs being forgotten, the sign-out should help. - A factory reset. It shouldn't be needed, but, it can solve things. You mention the database backup that the Kobo Utilities plugin can do. I wouldn't recommend restoring that in ether of the latter cases. I think starting fresh is a good idea. But, if you have put a lot of books on the device, what I suggest is taking a copy of everything on the book partition. If nothing above works, then you can restore this and get back to the state you were in before starting. Kobo do know there are still battery use issues being reported and are working on them. I don't know if they expected this update to solve everything, but the smart thing would be to plan on fixing the biggest and most obvious problems and then do another pass fixing the less obvious problems or those hidden by the ones just fixed. |

Thanks David. It bears trying a few more things before letting the KA1 go, possibly, especially since you mention they're in fact aware there are still issues and will try to correct them.
Truth be told I'd be rather dismayed to have to go back to Kindle, owing to the p***-poor choices regarding fonts, customization etc not to mention the screen size. We'll see. |

OK, here's something weird. On my Glo HD, I can no longer open any pdfs at all, regardless of the size (I've tested files from 1MB to 50MB that had previously opened before on the older firmware). It'll get stuck for a bit and then automatically reboot (I assume that's sickel?).
Does this happen to anyone else, or is it just happening to me? Last edited by rtiangha; 10-16-2016 at 02:10 AM. |
