By most standards I am 10 to 15 years from retirement. I don't think I will ever see that day as there's too much stuff to do and I love the challenges they present. If I ever had to retire and sit and twiddle my thumbs I would very quickly go stir crazy from boredom.

My wife lasted less than a month after her retirement from the telephone company. Now she has a busy schedule of community sewing and other charitable work.

See, I don't plan to ever "retire" in terms of not working. I would just like to be able to choose what I work on, regardless of whether someone wants to pay for it or not. There are a lot of projects I have in mind, particularly in the area of educational game design, that I can't spend time on because I'm at work all day. I'd also like to be getting more writing done.

However, if I manage to pull off this doctorate scam complete my doctorate, perhaps I'll be able to spend more time on the stuff I feel is really important, rather than spending all day hacking at cross-browser CSS problems.

I'm retired. It's amazing how many days you can spend thinking about possibly mulling over starting one of the things you love, in between distractions in the Lounge. It's depressing (and I am sure you've just come over all sympathetic at my woe)
