I'm sorry about that - it's a side effect of M3's new highlight system that's incompatible. Of course any highlights created in M3 will work exactly as you describe.
Thanks for an excellent product and for clearing that up. Sorry I missed that but I will adapt!

Just a quick question: How can I clean the internal web browsers cache (if it exists) in M3?

I have a password protected (web)site/directory and I have the feeling that M3 could "remember" passwords or sometimes just seems to ignore the password protection (hope not).

A change in function, in the Journal, and a terrible change it is. I'm not talking about old Marvin 2 highlights. But even with new Marvin 3 highlights, they only take you back to the book location from inside the book (from the "Annotations" tab), while the Journal in Marvin 3 is completely dead – it contains no live, tappable hyperlinks whatsoever. I find this to be an embarrassing flaw in Marvin 3, to be honest. Throughout Beta-testing, I tried to convince Kris that the Journal, too, should allow us to get back to the original book locations when tapping an annotation, but with no success so far. I hope Kris will change his mind about this later on.

Using the quick panel on iPad it's still 2 taps, (4) I'm working on adding 'book cover banners' in another update to make the info box easier to parse, (5) Now extra dimming is a per preset setting rather than a global one, which I think is a bit better given that there are more preset slots.(6) I'm working on a "custom header and footer" to configure it any way you like.
1. To reproduce the headers/footers dark issue
- turn on dark mode
- turn on extra dimming
- set headers and footers to 'dim'
- turn the brightness all the way down

This is how I read at night in bed and the headers and footers are not visible. If I crank up the brightness, I can start to make them out, but they are invisible this way.

2. Thanks, I missed that.

3 & 4: thanks

5: what are the preset slots? That say Day, Night, Paper, Dusk, and Dawn? Still not so quick to click between them. I prefer the extra dimming the way it was, but I guess it is not that big a deal.

6: more thanks

And, there are very instructive discussions pertaining to those unresolved issues in the current GitHub.
Marvin 3 was written from scratch. It might as well be a whole new app.

Even if the effects of an issue are the same the technical details probably aren't.
And this gives kguil a chance to clear the air. I am sure many things aren't relevant to both, so why mix the two together?

If a bug applies to the brand-new codebase as well, then yes, re-post that issue in the new tracker. Plus it shows you still care.
If there is relevant discussion in the Marvin 2 tracker, you can copy that too, or link to it.

@evanbernstein (1) Unfortunately, that's a physical limitation of the screen (contrast range). It is precisely why there is a "Prominent" headers and footers section. (2) You should try "fast theme switching" Setting > EPUB (see the settings screen help page too) (btw: Those presets can be renamed).

M3 iCloud Sync

Kris, thanks for the awesome new release! I spend most of my iPad time in Marvin so it's a very big deal to have a fresh exciting upgrade.

I never used Book Location Sync in M2 and want to use it now in M3. I have iCloud enabled for M3 on my iPad Air2 and iPhone 6. When I hit the sync button on my iPad it shows the current location, and I select that entry. I load the same book on the iPhone but it doesn't sync and I don't see how I get it to sync. The sync button on the iPhone gives me the iPhone M3 location. Am I missing something? This is one of the books I restored from my M2 backup.

Thanks again for M3!

Andy

Fascinating. I had that setting turned on, but didn't know how to access it. The help screen answered that. So now I can toggle between dim and not dim by taping with 2 or 3 fingers. Not bad.

Because certain themes make the header/footer invisible, prominent vs dim for headers/footers should possibly be a part of the theme, rather than a global setting (just as extra dimming now is)

I was about to submit a bug report because I thought that a number of the options in the app were broken completely broken (headers & footers, and the clock).

Thanks!

One other thing I forgot to ask about before:

In my iPhone's settings I see that M2 is using 662 MB and M3 is using 1.2 GB. I have added 0 books to Marvin since I upgraded. I've simply exported from M2, imported into M3, and read 2 books. Kris, is there a reason M3 is taking twice as much space? Or is my backup file still sitting somewhere? that I can delete it? If so, this should possibly be more prominent for the user to do so.

Absolutely, that's what I'll do, if it's really necessary. That's going to be a lot of copying and linking. I simply wanted to ask Kris to reconsider whether it was truly necessary to set up a brand-new GitHub. (To be honest, I don't see the two Marvins as two different apps, although I know that technically, they are.)

I've tried popup footnotes a few times and it works ok. Do you have an ePub 3 with anchors marked as
Code:
<a epub:type="noteref …>
and notes marked as
Code:
<aside epub:type="footnote" …
? I would guess that popups are supported only for ePub 3.

I'm aware ePub 3 support is preliminary. One thing about that, I'm not sure if it's in the spec, but using iBooks, the aside notes are not shown inline in the text. They're often included at the end of a chapter file or end of a section, and hiding them would be nice.

@YRead Currently, Marvin is very strict about the fact that they have to be identically the same book. Otherwise, the "other Marvin" will think that the books are different. Make sure that you added the book from exactly the same source. I'll look into this to see if I can make the matching procedure a bit less strict without causing other problems.

@evanbernstein It shouldn't be the case. Actually M3 uses a bit less space. I suspect that the backup file is still stored in M3 (as noted in the restore instructions) so you have both the original backup plus it's restored version in M3 taking twice the space. Go to Settings > General > Backup and delete the backup if you no longer need it.

@toomanybooks Popup footnotes depend on the EPUB advertising the footnotes as such. @democrite's technical note is spot on.
