That's the only reason I have a cover: to protect the screen from scuffs and scratches. Naturally I fold the cover back, otherwise I couldn't see the screen! Thinking that a book-like cover, or even a sleeve, will protect the device is a recipe for dissaster. For that, you'll need a hard case with a soft interior. Which will stop you from twisting the device and which will take the energy that releases when hitting a hard surface after a longer fall.

I have Tuff-Luv covers on both readers and will be buying a cover for the Kobo I just ordered. I find a cover easier to hold than a nude ereader, looks nicer and gives protection.

I always buy a cover for all of my portable gadgets, PW2 included. I don't tend to drop my PW but I drop my phone quite a bit.

My PW3 lives in a Dussell sleeve, but I read with a naked Kindle. covers add weight and bulk.

They also add protection. The only times I've ever dropped devices are when I've been using them! I need the protection when I'm using the device rather than when I'm not.

With expensive devices, I feel obligated to take steps to protect the investment. I've never used my iPhones, iPad or MacBook naked. My ereaders are no different to me.
Don't think of the cost of the device, think of the REPLACEMENT cost. You cannot buy a Kobo Mini now. So if it was to break, you would not have one. You have to treat your devices with care and a sleeve is not caring for your Mini. You take the Mini out of the sleeve, and there is no protection.

I agree 100%. When I bought my H2O, I did not buy a cover with it. When I took it out of the house once (before I got the cover), I put it in the box for protection.

I did get a cover fairly quickly once I found one I liked. But I still carted around my T1 when I went out because it had a cover and the H2O not. I treated the H2O extra careful until it was in a cover.

I use a sleeve for my PW. I don't like adding bulk when I'm reading, so the sleeve just protects it when it's in my laptop bag.

I can't see me dropping my kindle when I'm sitting down reading. I think most accidental drops are when people are putting them in, or pulling them out of their bag.

The weight and bulk consideration is very relative to the weight and bulk of the mammal using the device. For me, the added "weight and bulk" of a case is not just negligible, but positive. A case softens the edges of a hard plastic rectangle and adds the option of not holding it up in the first place, while also offering more ways to grip the device. For someone 60% my mass and build who rarely exerts themselves against anything more resistant than a car door or a keyboard, the equation is probably different.

I've never dropped a Reader putting it in or out of my bag. Most drops occur outside of putting in or out of a bag. So you are risking your PW more without a cover. Also, if you want to take your PW with you, chances are you'll be reading in places that do not have carpeting like on pavement. Plus, a cover can make the Reader easier to hold so less chance of dropping.

My most recent one was when I was sitting out in the garden, and put my Kindle on the arm of the chair to answer the phone. I knocked it off the chair when I was putting my phone back in my pocket, and it fell approximately 3' onto a concrete surface, which would in all probability have broken the screen had it not been in a case. As I said, the protection is needed when you're using the device far more than when you're not using it.

Yes. I recently found a used Kindle Touch. Testing and reading with it drove me nuts until the cover arrived from eBay. I'm always afraid I'm going to drop the eReader and break it when I've got no cover on it.

Answers like this is why I don't post much on internet forums.

You're trying to sound clever. It's not working.

When I go out with my kindle, I'll carry it in my inside coat pocket. Therefore, I take weight and bulk into consideration.

I'd like a Kobo Mini for this very reason.

I have never dropped my Reader when I wasn't using it. So if any think you can be really careful and not drop it when you are using it without a cover, think again. There's more chance of dropping it when you have it out without a cover than you do when it's in a sleeve.
