So Who's Still Loving Their Kindle Voyage?

Well, my display is good enough for me. I have had eyes problems since last summer and it will only get worse, so while I am not saying that my display is perfect (because obviously someone else with better eyesight might see colours everywhere), from my point of view, the display is clear.

Sadly, it will always stay like this for me, meaning herewith that my eyesight will only get worse and the problem cannot be corrected by glasses, nor by an operation. On the bright side, my voyage will stay great (for me). .

Edit: I actually like it so much that I am tempted to get a new Origami cover, in leather this time. I have the normal (plastic) red one but I saw the blue leather one live and it looks and feels very nice.

Edit 2: and I won't be "quieted". What an arrogant presumption to think any of us here would be...

To each their own one persons problem that they cannot live with is someone else's prefect device that they love for ever or until it goes to device heaven.

I am know retired but I was at one time a Quality Control Inspector/Engineer, I know that there are design limits, and design standards. And as long as a device or part means the design specs of the designers then, my job is to pass it on. It was also my responsibility to know the designers requirements, the manufacturers specs for each and every part that made up the finally device.

Aceflor, how did you get that progress bar and all those stats down at the bottom of the page? Did you jailbreak it or is that what the native firmware looks like now?

Is anyone bothered by bezel glare? My Voyage has a skin because I didn't like the glare. Does anyone else use a skin? I'm thinking of removing it.

I traded in a K4 not knowing if I really needed a screen with lights. I have a keyboard, which will never go. The K4 was very nice, but I got curious about a lighted screen. I felt I didn't need one.
Well I found out it's very handy to have my Voyage. I now can read in places I thought were impossible. I've got buttons (page turn), so it's Keyboard friendly for us diehards. So I really like my newer Voyage, about 2 months. I take it everywhere.

Yep, it's jailbroken and has Koreader on it. I can only recommend it. It allows me to sync between my different devices (Voyage, H2O, Android), to use my favorite fonts, and my many dictionaries.

Regarding my Voyage, I bought it on US Launch Day at BB in 2014, so it was one of the first units produced. The pics I posted were taken with my phone with a low quality camera. And that's it.

Thanks for the tips on the Collections. I know I still have to work them out, but I'm understanding them a lot better than before.

Battery - it was the indexing. Now the power usage is 2-3 books. I'm happy about that!

Looks like I'll have to give Koreader a go. The information you have at the bottm there is close to what I'd consider perfect. Is it possible to have the chapter marks show up as the little beads on the progress bar like the kindle keyboard does?

Love the buttons! I never thought I would need a lighted screen, and I didn't, but suddenly, all these medical places now have subdued lighting making it much harder to read. Ok, I have worse eyes as well. I do like the auto-lighting in the Voyage. Occasionally, I have to adjust manually because of weird lighting conditions, but otherwise, it's really great when I'm not under my reading lamp.

Not as beads, but as little lines yes. I don't like it, so I did not check it, but the bottom information is highly customable in Koreader (plus many other things, thus my inconditional love to it and foremost to the devs here).

The bezel of the Voyage is a bit of a fingerprint magnet, but it doesn't seem to be particularly reflective. With the flush screen it's very easy to give it a quick polish with a microfibre cloth every week or so to make it look nice again. No edges for dirt to get caught in, as there are with devices with a recessed screen.

I still like my poor neglected Voyage, but I don't love it by any means. It does have a lot of good things going for it, but also some bad things.

Things I Like about the Voyage

• The flush screen is nice. No dust bunnies accumulate in the corners and no pet hair gets lodged under the bezel edge.
• Lightweight design.
• Small design footprint. But let us be honest here, it is not pocket-able nor ever could be with a 6" screen. Making it too small it will lack usability. As it is the Voyage is really a bit too small. I wish it was a bit larger to make holding it and using it a better experience.
• The actual eInk screen is wonderful. It has very good resolution and a crisp, sharp look to it. The text still sucks but that is the fault of the jerks at Amazon who refuse to use better fonts are at least allow us to easily add our own. The screen has the potential, now Amazon needs to modify the FW to make it pop!

Things I Don't Like about the Voyage

• I hate that oricrappy cover, or at least I hate opening it as it flops in all directions. I've already dropped it twice due to that floppy cover. Since I never read with any device propped up in a cradle, the origami cover is not ideal for me, but it was the only game in town when I bought my Voyage.
  
• I strongly dislike the light layer that IMO degrades the view of the eInk screen. Mine doesn't have all the color patches of all the PWs I tried, but it still looks a bit murky due to that light layer being plastic, and the LED color is still way too bluish rather than a warmer color. It makes it rather harsh on my eyes when at night or in dark locations. I wish they made a Voyage without the light layer. Reading in a well lit location is a pleasure though.
  
• I hate the page turn thingies with a passion. They are right in the way and I had to disable them to keep from accidentally turning pages. So I kind of see why they made the Oasis bezel so wide, though I don't care for that look either. And the page turn thingies just don't seem to have the correct feel and feedback to be useful.
  
• The bezel is too narrow for me. My thumb, even when turned sideways, is twice as wide as the bezel, and that is problematic. I have to shift my thumb around a bit to see text in that area of the screen. For me the bezel at the bottom is just about the correct width for my fat thumb, but I understand how that would be too wide for many people.

Conclusion

The Voyage could definitely be better. However it serves its purpose as a very capable eInk reader in well lighted locations. To me it is terrible for reading in the dark, but I have other devices for that. As far as eInk devices, it is the best one I've owned, but I'm still awaiting a truly good one to come along that is designed for usability rather than to sell books.
