Is there any way to turn off the home screen without registering my Kindle? I don't have the personalization menu option.

No, But... there's also no point.

I mean, even if you register the kindle, turn off the home page, then unregister the kindle, (and yes, I've tried), the first page of cover view still only displays the 3 most recent books. The bottom row is occupied with a "Register Device Link.". So either way, your home page displays cover thumbnails for your 3 most recent books.

Although, I suppose, if you really dislike cover thumbnails, removing the home page would let your page display list view....

What are all the check marks supposed to indicate? That the item is on my device? When I'm in the downloaded tab, aren't they all on my device? So the check marks are superfluous.

To me the home page is functional. I do not look at the home page very much I am in a book reading. The most important thing is that the text is easy on the eyes and I can read it.

Totally superfluous and, uh, they stand out more than anything else on the screen, just like a totally superfluous element shouldn't. Great UI decision, Amazon.

I've told 'em over the phone five times those check marks need to be removed, and they're clearly not listening to me!
