As Dickloraine pointed out, it's REAL Old Fashioned Education. It's also why I've combined items from other systems as well. The 3 R's are what's important. Once you can master READING and COMPREHENSION, the World lays open before you.

Literature is no longer an offering in Grade Schools, so ANY "Great Books" I can put in front of him will be a bonus. The reading lists we all got as part of our High School years don't even exist anymore. I'll probably start with Twain.

He's got to go back over the Grammar & Composition books for grade-school for a quick refresher on the mechanics of writing; (I had to go track those down separately.)

retake the tests for the Mathematics books to determine new placement, and if he has "holes" in his math skills. His math books are a system developed in Eastern Europe and used in the UK at present. (Here they teach how to operate a calculator, not a pencil and paper to actually DO the math.)

History is no longer taught as such, but rather combined with "Ethnic & Cultural Studies." [those who forget history are doomed to repeat it] Put the materials in front of them as a textbook, and watch em go to sleep... Make it a biography and newpaper / magazine articles of the day, and they'll gobble it up and ask for more. Add just enough textbook to use as a guide.

Physical & Natural Science doesn't change much at the grade-school levels. And cooking teaches as much or more chemistry and math & science skills than any other offering at this grade-level.

I'll be going over the CK12 materials, as well as Kahn Academy, TED lectures, and some of the other High School options available, depending on what interests him this summer.
(He's learning programming thru MineCraft of all things....so is mama for that matter)

Mama gets in and studies right along with them, If mama can't do it, she'd better learn in a hurry, or change what needs to be taught. I've learned more getting into the HomeSchool materials we use than I learned in College for the Liberal Arts & Sciences degree I got in the 80's. Yes, I'm dating myself.

The Dumbing Down of America continues. Some of us are fighting it tooth-n-nail.
Do not get me started on the "education system".
I worked as a math tutor and it amazed me the number of college students that didn't know basic math.
Oh grocery shopping is another good place for learning math.

Good luck with your son.

I disagree.

If I take Through the Looking Glass, put my name on it, and start selling it on Amazon, I start making money.

If I take Through the Looking Glass, put my name on it, and add a generic copyright notice, I can't sell it on Amazon and may get a $2500 fine.

To some people, that is an expensive way to circle a rabbit hole.

IMO. Deal with it!

A much more likely result is that you get your Amazon account closed when people report you for misrepresenting yourself as the author.

Wow, what a curriculum! Religious/scientific theories I can't subscribe to, totally outdated English language textbooks, "Character & Etiquette" books of the type my grandparents were brought up on (black pedagogy, anyone?), and Mein Kampf listed under "Biography." I haven't dared to look at the "Helps for Mom & Dad" section.

I really hope you pick very wisely from those offerings, and add a lot of more up-to-date materials.

Yes, religion class (for some, not all), manners & Etiquette that would make any parent proud and Hostess grateful. Also great Living History, if you think on it, teaching how people in the past behaved, and WHY it was that way.

As to Mein Kampf - one who "knows his enemy" can defeat him. There are others I don't agree with either.

I really hope you pick very wisely from those offerings, and add a lot of more up-to-date materials. - If you care to make some suggestions, I'll be more than happy to take a look at them. Thanks.

Some modern science would be good. An awful lot's been learned about the world - and indeed the universe - since the books on that list appeared.

I'm afraid I don't have any specific suggestions, but you could ask in the "Reading Recommendations" forum here.

Mr Durrant - If I decide to go into depth on the religious or political teachings of our curriculum, or Homeschoolers in general, I will TRY to remember to conduct such discussions in the correct forum.
Thanks for the "heads-up."

Question - do I gather correctly that while discussing the theory of Creationism in this forum area is NOT allowed, discussing the theory of Evolution IS ? Isn't one side of that debate just as inflamatory as the other??

Thanks.

If you ever get a chance, here is a park with a living history exhibition.

I think evolution would either belong in the lounge or P&R. Although if you are looking for books, head over to the reading recommendations.

No. The "Politics and Religion" forum is the place for discussing both. You can use the "Reading Recommendations" forum to ask for recommendations for books on any topic, but not to discuss the topics themselves if the moderating team (those people whose names are shown in green rather than black) consider them to be likely to result in heated conversations. That's why we have a dedicated "P&R" forum for people who specifically enjoy such discussions. Despite its name, it actually covers a much wider gamut of topics than Politics and Religion: basically anything that people are likely to be upset or offended by.

If you wish to join the P&R forum (it's invisible by default), go to "User Control Panel", click the "Group Memberships" link on the left side of the page, and join the "Hardened Debaters" group. You'll then see "Politics and Religion" in the list of forums, next to the "Lounge" forum.

Best to just keep away from any side - Creationism (Young or Old Earth), Evolution, Intelligent Design, Pastafarian - something is bound to upset someone.
