Beside the Bonnie Brier Bush (Xist Classics) by Ian Maclaren
A collection of stories of rural Scottish life that achieved extraordinary popularity when published in 1894 selling more than 700 thousand copies and remaining in print to this day. The genre is 'kailyard' and though I can follow the dialect easily enough it may be a difficulty for some. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ian_Maclaren Ian Maclaren (pseudonym of Rev. John Watson; 3 November 1850 - 6 May 1907) was a Scottish author and theologian. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CTAYQDK/ http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01CTAYQDK/ http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B01CTAYQDK/ |

The Return of the Soldier (Xist Classics) by Rebecca West
Having fought in World War One, 35-year-old Chris Baldry finally returns home. Believing he's 20 years old, he is shocked when he finds out the he actually has a wife and that his childhood sweetheart is already married with another man. He slowly realizes the passing of time but he can't remember anything from his last 15 years. Is there a solution? Dame Rebecca West (1892-1983) began as a journalist and a feminist writing for The Freewoman and The Clarion. She met H.G. Wells in 1912 and together they had a son, Anthony West. In 1918 she published The Return of the Soldier, the first of her novels, which deals with the issue of shell-shock. She married H.M. Andrews in 1930 and they then travelled in Yugoslavia gathering material for her famous Black Lamb, Grey Falcon. She was present at the Nuremberg trials, and, following the treason trials in London, published The Meaning of Treason. She continued to write and review with her usual panache and vigour until her death. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CTAYRCA/ http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01CTAYRCA/ http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B01CTAYRCA/ Public domain in US but should still be in copyright in Life+50/70 countries so Xist may be messed up. |

No Quarter: A Matty Graves Novel (The Matty Graves Novels) by Broos Campbell
This first book in the series introduces Matty Graves, midshipman in the early years of the United States Navy. In 1799, the young U.S. Navy faces France in an undeclared Quasi-War for the Caribbean. Matty Graves is caught up in escalating violence as he serves aboard the Rattle-Snake under his drunken cousin, Billy. Matty already knows how to handle the sails and fight a ship. Now, with the sarcastic Lieutenant Peter Wickett as his mentor and nemesis, he faces the ironies of a war where telling friend from foe is no mean trick. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00529MYOO/ https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00529MYOO/ https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00529MYOO/ |

Short story writing is a very long-established genre in Russian literature. Are you not aware, for example, that Anton Chekhov, best known today as a playwright, also wrote detective stories? (Very good ones, too. They're available in English translation in a collection called "A Night in the Cemetery: And Other Stories of Crime and Suspense".)
