Although I've just come across the Holocene Era*. Which would make those dates 11000 HE - 11500 HE.

*The end of the last ice age happened approximately 11,715 +/- 99 years ago, dated from Greenland ice cores. The Holocene Era just sets the start of the calendar to -10001 BCE. So 2015 CE is just 12015 HE. It gives positive dates for all events in history.

The problem with using Zulu Time is that a broken clock is only right once a day.

Luck;

Sorry, do Zulus tell the time in some way that's different to other people?

I can explain the Egyptian dating system if you're seriously interested, but if this just some kind of joke I'd rather not waste my time. Do you genuinely want to know?

TBH, partly a joke, everyone was chipping in with various date/time systems

Although, saying that, most things fascinate me so go ahead.
I only know the basics in that the numbers work mostly like Roman Numerals.
So the hieroglyphics numbers match like
Upstroke = I = 1
Heelbone = X = 10
Rope = C = 100
Lotus plant = M = 1000
But without the additive/subtractive method of the order of roman numerals.
It's been a while since I read anything about it but there was a Hieratic system that came later (had to look up the name ).

I know next to nothing about the dating system though, so please, educate away.

OK, very briefly then:

Years were numbered starting from 1 for the reign of each new king. There were three seasons reflecting the agricultural year: "akhet" ("inundation", when the Nile flooded), "peret" ("growing", when crops were grown), and "shemu" ("harvest").

Each season had 4 months of 30 days each, divided into three 10-day weeks.

That makes 360 days, so to make the year up to the correct 365 days, there were 5 extra days at the end of the year which were not in any month.

Dates were written as the "regnal year" of the king, followed in turn by month number, season, and day number, so a date would be something like "year 15, 3rd month of harvest, day 8".

As you rightly say, numbers themselves were written a little like Roman numerals, on a decimal system, so there were symbols for:

1: a single stroke
10: an upside-down "U"
100: a coil of rope
1000: a lotus flower
10,000: a finger
100,000: a tadpole

and you just repeated each symbol the appropriate number of times, from the largest unit down to the smallest, so the number "35" was written "UUUIIIII" (with the "U's" upside down.)

There was also a method of expressing fractions, which was rather complex and I won't go into it.

Hope that helps,

Cool, cheers.
If I recall correctly all fractions were 1/n and additive, with different symbols than the normal numbers, seem to remember the Egyptian eye glyph being the key to remembering the various bits.

Did they name the Pharaoh with the year, or is it just really hard to timeline any writings?

Ages since I read anything on Egyptology and I suspect some of my understandings may have got a bit confused over the years (personally I blame Stargate SG-1).

Sometimes the name of the king was added, but often not. This, as you very rightly say, often makes it really hard to date things, because you don't know which king is being referred to.

If I remember correctly, letters are used to indicate the different time zones (excluding "I" and "O") with "Z" used for Greenwich Mean Time.

Concerning fractions, the one exception to the "1/n" was "2/3."

There were actually two exceptions: there were special symbols for "2/3" and "3/4".
