And we were out at midnight for the new book releases years ago. I love and still read the books, but having a growing concern Rowling is going to turn me against the series if she doesn't let it go at some point. It's a modern classic, let's not "Disney" the thing to death.
I think that what happened is that both Lucas and Rowling got a lot of questions about backstory that they hadn't really thought about, so they winged it. Plus, it was so successful that there is a lot of pressure to continue the franchise.

I know that with Star Wars, Lucas envisioned a 9 movies fairly early in the process. The original idea was to do the first 3, go back and do the 3 early movies, then finish the last three movies with the original actors, but as the years went by, that became impractical.

I think that Rowling's best bet would be to do something like the new movie, i.e. move on from Harry Potter and explore that universe with different characters. She talked about writing some books from Colin Creevey's point of view.

I know I would much rather an author simply write more material rather than try to retcon what people read through after-the-fact "word of God" proclamations.

But just as much as I believe that, I also believe it is a reader's responsibility to keep their own "canon." If the books suffice for you (rhetorical you), then let them suffice. Don't seek out extra-book proclamations or confirmation of your interpretations of what you read. You don't have to read what Rowling (or anyone else) is saying about a finished product. It's OK to separate a work from its creator and their musings.

It's not possible for an author to "turn me against" books of theirs I've already read and enjoyed. No matter what comes after. I do listen to what some of my favorite authors have to say. Just not so much what they have to say about their own finished works. Those book experiences are now mine. I won't suffer their creators' attempts to retroactively affect, alter or refine those experiences. I simply don't care what I was "supposed" to take away from them.

I'd see this play, though (and maybe even read the script). If it was close by and I could afford it, of course. But rest assured; whatever I thought of the play would have no effect on my feelings about the Harry Potter book series. That's a done deal. Nor do I care if future fans' first experiences of the series is not based on the same "canon" as mine was.

Oddly enough, several of my friends have children who went to the midnight event and have already finished (and loved) the script. Color me surprised.

I felt very meh about the last few books, so I have no interest in reading the new book/play (and a good thing too at $17.99 ).

J.K. Rowling announces the end of Harry Potter: 'I think we're done'
http://www.msn.com/en-us/entertainme...id=ansmsnent11
Quote:
Hold your new copy of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child close, people! After nearly 20 years, seven novels, eight feature films, and theme park attractions around the world, J.K. Rowling announced she is officially done expanding the trajectory of the boy wizard at the center of it all.
Quote:
Rowling's announcement comes as Cursed Child ends a little over a month of preview runs and officially opens to the public. Further elaborating on her decision to conclude Harry's story with the play, the author added: "This is the next generation, you know. So, I'm thrilled to see it realized so beautifully but, no, Harry is done now."

So Harry is "done" (not that that couldn't change), but of course that doesn't necessarily mean the larger world around Harry Potter is done. We know at the very least there will be the "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" movie later this year and it's sequel(s) after that.

I hope she is done. Now let's see how long she sticks to it.

Most such stories tend to end with the hero riding off into the sunset or some such thing for a reason. I would almost say that she would be better off throwing open the Harry Potter world to genre writers, like Lucas did with Star Wars.

‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ Producers Consider a Broadway Run
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/01/th...=tw-share&_r=0
Quote:
Alert the Department of Magical Transportation. Harry Potter is considering a trip to New York.

The lead producers of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” the new play that is a sequel — and the eighth story — in the Harry Potter canon, said this weekend that, having won over critics and audiences in London, they are ready to start thinking about a Broadway production.

The producers, Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender, said in a joint telephone interview that they have made no decisions, but that they expect to begin conversations in London this week and to schedule meetings in New York in the fall.

Although I filled in much of the details as I read, watching the play would probably do far more justice to the story...so I hope it comes to the US.

I would have preferred a full-length book since the imagery and settings mean so much to the stories.

Just when you thought you were out... they pull you back in.

'Harry' may be done, but there will be more Hogwarts tales soon with a series of "Pottermore Presents" shorts.

I enjoyed the 7 HP books, I felt absolutely no need to dig deep into characters, motivations and inconsistencies. I also have enjoyed some fanfic from G. Norman Lippert who wrote a series of books (4 in all) about Harry's son James (which makes more sense to me than Severus but there ya go)... For those interested, lightweight but enjoyable reads can be found at http://www.jamespotterseries.com/indexOriginal.html

Harry has two sons. James, and Albus Severus.

Both in canon, and in the James Potter Series (which is fully canon and epilogue compliant).

Oh yes, I forgot about Albus! Must read again

I've actually just begun listening to Stephen Fry read, again. Its been ages. I'm actually not interested in a script, so The Cursed Child doesnt tweak me at all.
