From most of what I have read, having the account closed means that there is no more buying of new Kindle/Fire devices as they (most likely) won't be able to be registered and there is a chance of no new digital purchases. So all you'd get is your current device(s) and current digital content. One question that's not been brought up yet is the question of Amazon Prime. If I have Amazon Prime and my account is closed, would I still have access to Amazon streaming and Amazon music until the Prime account ends? |

I'm going to make one interesting and relevant point which does not seem to have been canvassed. Many Western jurisdictions have consumer laws and tribunals which are extremely cheap and quick and favour consumers. For example, New South Wales (the Australian state, not part of the UK) has a Fair Trading Tribunal which would appear to have jusrisdiction in this type of case. I imagine that, depending on Amazon's reasons for cancelling an account, they woudl probably not interfere with the cancellation. However, I expect they would take a very dim view of Amazon not allowing access to purchased content, and may well even award monetary compensation if absolutely necessary. Also of interest would be what amounts to supervised mediation at the beginning of the process. Similar Tribunals exist in other Australian States. I would be surprised if similar Tribunals do not exist in the UK and perhaps even Canada. I don't care to speculate about the Civil Law jurisdictions of te EU, but given the Nanny State mentaility in that particular region of the world?
It is in Amazon's interests to be reasonable. |

The posts that have been quoted here seem to suggest that Amazon do allow access to purchased content. I've seen no reports that anyone's access to their purchased content is blocked when Amazon place a block on the selling on new goods for an account.

Again, the "punishment" for returning too many items seems to be the inability to purchase physical goods - rights are not lost for digital purchases on closed accounts. |

Agreed Harry. I did not mean to suggest otherwise. The purpose of this thread is of course to clarify this and hopefully get Amazon to give a full statement of their policy. Personally I am a big fan of Amazon and are currently purchasing virtually all of my ebooks from them. They are not perfect but are still streets ahead of the opposition.

The issue seems to be what happens when existing devices fail. That's what isn't clear and in my case worrying for audiobooks.
My account isn't closed and hopefully never will be, I won't buy physical items anymore, but it's still a concern. Last edited by Josieb1; 10-20-2015 at 09:05 AM. |

It sounds like no matter what you can use Kindle For PC and the Kindle Cloud Reader to access ebooks. But once your ereader dies or breaks you are out of luck. Would be curious if the Kindle Android Apps could still be activated with a closed account. Also wonder how new/fresh activations of Kindle For PC or the Cloud Reader might be affected on that closed account because open accounts have 'manage devices and content' available via an Amazon account.
If this is a serious fear, one could only purchasing DRM-Free ebooks and back them up. |
