5.6.5 Jailbreak (closed-kindle) -- released!

It should. @Branch Delay says it has been tested successfully on the PW2, and there is only one firmware branch for the PW2.

I've had my PW2 9017 for about a year and stopped using it about 6 months ago and then found it again and jumped right back in. As i was trying to organize my Kindle using Calibre i found out i couldn't use the collections plugin unless it was JB.... so i end up here and realize that i had never connected it to wifi (which i hadnt until like a week ago when i found it) and if i hadn't done that i wouldn't be on 5.6.5 waiting to JB my PW.. i could have JB it first.

Ugg..hopefully i don't have to wait but like 20 days right!?

I'm almost in the same boat. I had a older kindle that I used daily. Figured it was time to upgrade and got a PW3. I have all my books on it now, but no JB. Shame Amazon couldn't/hasn't come up with something to allow external apps to do this.

First of all, thanks Branch Delay & colleagues!!!
Since I got my PW2 in april I never lost my hopes that you would find a way...
(a way for this senseless race of Amazon)
So I regularly visited mobileread and finally got registered ;-D

Now my question.
At this moment, my EU PW2 (9017, with 5.6.5) is configured in spanish (there is no catalan option, something we would have if it was a bit more open system...)
In order to do the jailbreak, am I supposed to change it to English?

Will this software jailbreak allow one to downgrade to a previous firmware the same way you'd be able to with serial access? Running 5.6.5 but eventually want to run 5.4.4.2. I've got a ripped TX pad on my serial port on a PW2 that was an impuse purchase recently (on an unrelated note - anyone here know of any other suitable attachment points? - see my other thread if you like) but thankfully my KV is also sporting a serial port jailbreak so I'm not missing anything.

I'd be willing to test it on my KV and report the results, as I know that I could debrick if something unexpected occured, if you'd like to shoot it my way. Not sure that I'd be willing to take a chance on the PW2 though until it is fully released and confirmed working, since I don't have serial access on that one - for now.

I'm glad I finally signed up for this forum. I've been reading for a couple of years now - maybe longer, and have jailbroken a few kindles and rooted a Sony as well with the information I've obtained. Looking to give back to the community.

You should be able to downgrade the firmware over ssh -- you'll need to boot into an ssh-enabled diags partition in order to overwrite the main partition.

It's easily understood why Branch Delay would want to give an appropriate amount of time to Amazon to ensure the security of the hundreds of now vulnerable systems out there, but am I the only one who childishly feels the upset of not having a "up to date" jailbreak? I mean if Amazon gets to just release a patch before the jailbreak is even out.
Plus, I'm the kind of user that gets suspicious of companies like Amazon, since it's likely they're keeping a new feature in the back pocket for just such an occasion.
On the other hand, speaking about Amazon, they did just recently remove my "Special Offers" for free after chatting up their tech support. It took two sessions, since one person wasn't willing to or able to remove my special offers, and other was willing and able.

Well, that is why the advice in the OP is to keep your Kindle in airplane mode. Amazon can't push a patch then.

Once you are jailbroken, the jailbreak will be preserved through firmware updates.

Informative. I did not understand the preservation part of the whole deal. I just assumed the jailbreak would be out of date or... something to that effect. I can't wait to patch my jailbroken, well-loved kindle and stop silent updating!

Ah, I think your off by about 4 orders of magnitude there.

Touch screen Kindles are probably measured in units of 10^6 (millions) not in units of 10^2 (hundreds).

Although that is just my guess, since Amazon has never published any clear numbers about the number of Kindles shipped.
My own guess above might be off by another order of magnitude.

This isn't necessarily supposed to work on anything other than a PW2/PW3. It might, but please don't get your hopes up and assume it will. Furthermore, only tested on English language devices (I think). May run into a lot of bugs when it comes out.

As a note, you'll have to factory reset your device before attempting the jailbreak.

I haven't heard anything back from amazon other than "we're still working on it." Hopefully something more substantial this week depending on what they're doing to implement a fix...

Sorry to come back, what should we do if we have the kindle in another language? Just change it?

@idoit: I could use a dump of a PW3/KT2/KV diags partition to make sure RP is safe on those (and then actually enable support for those devices in my build of the RP ).
