I see that the fact that iOS 9 randomly fails to play notification sounds is being widely reported as a bug. Very annoying. If notifications are important to you, I'd suggest holding off on this upgrade until the problem is fixed. I believe this can affect any type of "push" notification, including alarms and reminders.

My alarms and notifications are working too, but this issue could be specific to certain iPhone/iPad models. They work fine on my iPhone 6+. I haven't really paid much attention as to whether they work on my iPad Mini Retina. My notification and alarm issue is with El Capitan on my MacBook Pro, but of course that is not going to be related to this issue in iOS 9.

[OT] How is your 2010 MacBook doing with El Capitan? My MacBook Pro is the same age, I haven't upgraded yet.

Before you take the plunge and upgrade to El Capitan, make sure all the programs you use do work. There are some compatibility issues and some programs will need to be upgraded to work.

It doesn't fail every time - it's random, which is even more annoying in a way. Maybe one time in three a notification will appear on the screen, but the sound doesn't play. It appears to be a widespread problem that appeared in iOS9 and has not been fixed even in the 9.1 beta.

I've been using EverClip 2 to save web pages to Evernote. The latest update has this worrying note:

Quote:
Due to a new iOS limitation, apps can no longer use pasteboard in background. Don't worry! our Today Widget and Safari Extension are better and faster way to create clips.
I don't want to clutter my today screen with another widget, I liked the way it worked before! Has anyone had difficulties with this new restriction?

That is the way El Capitan does on my MacBook Pro. It is randomly omitting the sounds when I get an email. But I've had issues with Yosemite and Mavericks with that too, and all three are extremely slow to update the mail. I get notifications of mail immediately on my iOS devices, but it might be 30 minutes later before the mail arrives on the Mac OS X devices. Same mail, same service, etc., but the OS X mail program just seems like it is much slower to update. This occurs on my 2014 MacBook Pro running El Capitan and my 2012 Mac Mini running Yosemite. I've had a lot of issues with the mail app and my GoDaddy IMAP email account on both Macs.

Come to think about it, my iPhone 6+ might have been omitting the sounds when I got text messages under iOS 8. I wear my iPhone in an Otterbox Defender case and belt holster most of the time. I would very often look at my phone to do something then notice I had a text message that had arrived several minutes or more prior. I just thought the case was attenuating the notification signal. But I do hear notices with the case on, so perhaps the sounds just were not occurring.

I've noticed that the sound doesn't always play, but I simply assume that was from listening to too much rock and roll with headphones when I was a teenager.

I think that some of the notification problems might be a level of confusion as to what is the active device at a given time. I have gotten notifications on my iPhone, Apple Watch, iPads and iMac. I seem to be a lot more likely to get the appropriate notifications when I'm away from home and have my iPads set to airplane mode. That means that the only device that is in range of my iPhone is my Apple Watch. If the iPhone is currently active, I usually get the notification there, if it's not, then I get the notification on my Apple Watch. But sometimes, I don't get any notification at all. It's odd.

It's definitely an iOS9 issue. I get notifications with 100% reliability on my iPad Air 2, which is still running whatever the last version of iOS8 was. I got notifications with 100% reliability on my iPhone 6 until I upgraded it from iOS8 to iOS9. It's definitely the upgrade that's caused the problem, as many other people have also experienced. It's not a show-stopper, but it is irritating.

No problems so far. However it should be noted I have upgraded to 8GB RAM and an SSD. I don't think I'd want to be running it on bog standard 4GB and 5400rpm drive.

I also used SuperDuper! to make a clone of the drive so if push comes to shove and I end up hating it for some reason, I can roll back to Yosemite.

I like it though, overall. it seems a bit smoother.

Thanks! I have a SSD too, which is probably why I can still use it with Yosemite.

My MacBook Pro 2014 has 16GB RAM, SSD, and i7 quad-core, so no issues with it and El Capitan. But I really didn't anticipate any as far as hardware. More importantly, I have not encountered any major software issues with older apps. I'm always concerned about that whether a new Mac OS X or a new Windows release. This MBP came with Mavericks installed.

My Mac Mini late 2012 with 16GB RAM, 5400 RPM HDD, and i5 dual-core has no issues with Yosemite or Windows 10 Home. I was afraid it might, but both work well on it with no sluggishness. The Mac Mini is the bottom of the line Mac. My Mini came with Mountain Lion installed.
