Those are really the questions, Nate. I shit you not. And ... that's my point exactly ... that's what the show tests. It's got nothing to do with smarts, and everything to do with embarassing some poor shmuck because he/she doesn't know who was the US Secretary of State when the Territory of Alaska was acquired from Russia.

(Oh puhleeeze!!)

How's this for pathetic?? I wrote a loooong reply about all the famous (or just really interesting people) I am related to ... and then I hit the wrong button and lost it all.

But, in short, with no explanations, because I really don't have time tonight to try to recreate the whole thing:

Admiral (Sir) Levering Smith ... uncle and one of the most brilliant scientists ever.

Judge Thomas H. Bacon, best friend of Sam Clemmons growing up and one of the people used by Mr. Clemmons in creating his character of Tom Sawyer. (The judge was Admiral Smith's grandfather.)

Reverend Hunter Lewis (my grandfather) known as the "Preacher of the Rio Grande" .... lots of information around on him if you put that search in Google ... he was a character.

John and Abby Seymour ... aunt and uncle, most people would have seen them in roles on TV or movies or on the Broadway stage. They never made it to "star" status ... just your basic working actors. However, they did make the cover of Newsweek one time.

However ... they'se all daid an' gone now. Yessir ....

Really? You aren't shiteing me? I envy people who have family histories. I have none other than knowing my grandparents were from the Nashville area. so sad. No names, no history. Oh, my mom did like to use to tell me her grandmother was a Cherokee princess. Usually while she was drinking. Like 90% of the people claiming partial indian heritage today don't say the same thing......

No, I knew that one. Seward's Folly was the nickname given to the Alaska Purchase by its opponents. Couldn't tell you the first name, though.

I'm a history buff, and at one point I worked out an alternate history where the USA didn't buy Alaska. I only took it as far as WW2. I found an interesting twist; while the Republic of Alaska Navy didn't have any aircraft carriers, it did have a handful of battleships. The US had basically given them away because of the arms treaties. This resulted in those hulls not being developed into the aircraft carriers that won the war in the Pacific.

And yes, I know I fudged some details above. It's late and I'm tired.
