Sorry, couldn't resist . But I agree with David that there are a number of changes that are going to make some people very happy. And no, we have no idea when it will be released. Could be next week, could be Christmas.

OK, you've twisted my arm. Here's all the changes so far. Hopefully Kobo won't somehow redact this post.

In the new features there are:
  • ***** ******* ** * *** ******* ***** ***** ** ***** *** ****** ** **********
  • *********** **** ******* ********* *** ******* *** ** ****** ******* **** ******** ** *****
  • ******* ** ******* *** **** ** *** ******* **** ********** **** **** ******* *** *******
  • ****** ** ******* **** ******* ******* **** ** **** ********* ** ******* ****** ** **** *** *******
  • ******* ** ******** ***** **** ********* * ********* ****** ** ***** *** ***** ************
  • ********** ***** *** **** ********
  • ** **** ** ******** ******* ***** ********** *** ***** ** ********
  • *********** ** ***** *** ******* ****** ********* *** ******* ** **** ** *** ****** ******** ******* *** **** ******** ********* *** ************* *********** ********** ** ***** ** *******
  • *********** **** ** ****** ** *** ****** *** *********** **** ******* ** ********** ********
  • ******** ************* ********* * ********* ** **** ******* ******** **********
  • ******** ************* **** *** ** ******** **** ****** *** *** ********* ***** ** ***** *****

New but hidden options:
  • *******
And in the bug fixes:
  • ******** ******* ******** ** ****** ******* ******
  • ***** ** ***** ******** ** **** ***** ** ******** **** ***** ******* ** *********
  • ** **** ****** ** *** ****** ** ** ** ***** *** ****** *** ***** **** **** ***** ** *** ***
  • ******* ** ****** ********* ******** ***** **** ******** **** **** *** **** ** * ********

I think that's it. II might have missed something I don't use much. Most of these are good and some have been asked for for a while.

What do you think?

I just tested Kindle Paperwhite 1 vs Kobo H2O for highlighting text. Is it just my Kobo reader or H2O does not register well finger touch? Kindle is capable to fast and accurate highlights where as Kobo requires multiple tries to highlight the right text.

I couldn't resist. And so you know, that list is real, just obfuscated. There are no big features in the next firmware, but a lot of smaller things that people will like. And one that will probably cause a lot of discussion.

Here is the link to the hinted version. Give it a try. I'd be interested what you think. Please also try at small sizes as well as large. Thanks.

I tried the hinted version, but at the font size that I read at, I really can't tell the difference between the two. The one labelled "Compact" is the hinted version.

Try it at a really small size and you may see a difference.

Capacitive should be more responsive than IR touch (at least as far as I'm aware) but not a huge difference. Perhaps you are just more used to the PW so your fingers work better with the capacitive touch of it compared to the H2O?

I don't think robertpolson was talking about touch responsiveness in general, but rather about text selection. I do some highlighting and annotations myself, and much as I love my Aura HD I must admit that text selection on Kobo can be pretty glitchy and extremely slow.
Two notes though: I'm still on 3.3.1, because I've heard that 3.8.0 can be even slower (mostly with the DB, but still). And most of the books I highlight and annotate are in Russian, so the firmware might have extra difficulty with non-Latin characters.

Unfortunately, I had to return Aura H2O. I gave a good try and I really tried to like it. However, lack of proper annotation support, clunky highlighting, the need to apply patches to remove wasted space, and occasional glitches when chaining pages, made me return Kobo.

I am looking forward to return to Amazon once I get a hold of Kindle Voyage by the end of this month.

Thank you everyone for your support in this discussion.

With your H2O patched the way it is, is it possible to have no margins at all so the text is right at the edges of the screen?

On my (patched) Aura HD you can have text within a millimeter or maybe two of the edge (while the bookmark graphics sit right on the edge). I don't think you want to come closer than that: the edges cast shadows or get in the way when you tilt the reader.
