I didn't even know there were Bester ebooks. Too bad they have problems. It seems to be from this company. I remember the ibooks print imprint quite a few years ago -- I think this is the same company the same company but with more imprints. (They had the name before Apple. )

Print expertise doesn't necessarily translate into ebook expertise. And the covers on some of those books are awful. Some of them use cover art I recognize from the original print books, but the Bester books?... The art for The Demolished Man doesn't scream Demolished Man to me...

Firebrand (Rebel Angel Series)
by Gillian Philip

is $2.99 at Amazon

http://www.amazon.com/Firebrand-Rebe...ords=firebrand

Below is the blurb:
At the end of the sixteenth century, religious upheaval brings fear, superstition, and doubt to the lives of mortals. Yet unbeknownst to them, another world lies just beyond the Veil: the realm of the Sithe, a fierce and beautiful people for whom a full-mortal life is but the blink of an eye. The Veil protects and hides their world…but it is fraying at the edges, and not all think it should be repaired.

Discarded by his mother and ignored by his father, sixteen-year-old Seth MacGregor has grown up half wild in his father’s fortress, with only his idolized older brother, Conal, for family. When Conal quarrels with the Sithe queen and is forced into exile in the full-mortal world, Seth volunteers to go with him.

But life beyond the Veil is even more dangerous than they expected, and Seth and Conal soon find themselves embroiled in a witch-hunt—in which they are the quarry. Trapped between the queen’s machinations at home and the superstitious violence of the otherworld, Seth must act before both of them are fed to the witch-hunters’ fires…

Brimming with intrigue and rebellion, Firebrand is the first book in the Rebel Angels series by Gillian Philip, the Carnegie Medal–nominated author of Crossing the Line and multi-award-nominated Bad Faith.

Bester's short fiction appears to be on sale now also

Virtual Unrealities: The Short Fiction of Alfred Bester $2.99 Amazon US

The appears to be an ebook of the relatively recent paperback that compiled all of this, with the intro by Robert Silverberg.

Did anyone pick this one up? According to a reviewer, the original paperback had font issues, and since this is published by the same company, I was wondering if they fixed it. For example, the Pi Man has text formatting in the shape of the Eiffel Tower and a few other things. I'm still debating, buy this, or scan my SFBC edition of Starlight, which contains almost everything in this ebook, and a couple others.

Thanks, Laurablue. I grabbed it. The anthology comprises 860,000 words representing 111 new authors and includes excepts from 29 novels, plus full text of 15 novelettes, 113 short stories, 26 pieces of flash fiction and one poem.

The anthology presents a great opportunity for sf&f fans to discover new writers.

Quote:
Moon has spent his life hiding what he is — a shape-shifter able to transform himself into a winged creature of flight. An orphan with only vague memories of his own kind, Moon tries to fit in among the tribes of his river valley, with mixed success. Just as Moon is once again cast out by his adopted tribe, he discovers a shape-shifter like himself... someone who seems to know exactly what he is, who promises that Moon will be welcomed into his community. What this stranger doesn't tell Moon is that his presence will tip the balance of power... that his extraordinary lineage is crucial to the colony's survival... and that his people face extinction at the hands of the dreaded Fell! Now Moon must overcome a lifetime of conditioning in order to save and himself... and his newfound kin.

I picked it up. In Kindle for PC, they appear to have inserted those particularly typeset places as images, so while the type may not match the rest of the story (depeding on your ereader choices), the type in the Eiffel Tower is still shaped as such. I've attached a gif screenshot.

Free today on Amazon UK - Carpe Demon: Adventures of a Demon-Hunting Soccer Mom by Julie Kenner

Kate Connor is your average, everyday mom with two kids, a husband, and one very big secret ... she used to be a Demon Hunter for a secret arm of the Vatican. Now retired, she's more interested in the domestic than the demonic. So when she catches sight of a demon in Wal-Mart, she tells herself it's some other Hunter's problem. But when that demon attacks her in her kitchen, retirement is no longer an option.

Now Kate has to kick a little demon butt, figure out why the creatures are trying to take her out and take over her home town, and at the same time take care of her 2 year old, deal with a hormonal 14 year old, get the family to Catholic mass on time, and try to keep her past a secret from her daughter and her husband.

She's a little out of practice, but hey ... if she can juggle two kids and an impromptu dinner party, ridding the town of demons should be a piece of cake. Like the saying goes, Carpe Demon ... and Kate intends to do just that.'

Half Way Home by Hugh Howey
Quote:

This download is for the ENTIRE 350+ page book, Half Way Home from Hugh Howey, author of the award-winning Molly Fyde Saga and the New York Times and USA Today bestselling WOOL series.

------

Five hundred of us were sent to colonize this planet.

Only fifty or so survived.

We woke up fifteen years too early, we had only half our training, and they expected us to not only survive … they expected us to conquer this place. The problem is: it isn’t safe here. We aren’t even safe from each other.
NoiseTrade

I hope this one is alright for me to post. According to Amazon this book has a publisher, but I know Howey is known for being self-published.
I have not personally read his work, but I have one or two of this other books due to very high recommendations I have found on these forums.

Brilliant. I grabbed it also because I am always a bit reluctant to spend on writers I don't already know and like, and the local library doesnt buy much in the way of sci-fi so something like this is perfect.
