It's the AZW3 with an embedded font that I sideload. As you say if I send a mobi I get all the features of an Amazon book including whispersync but I lose my font. If I sideload I get my font but lose whispersync. It's becoming a compromise which it never was before.

Hybrid files (mobi7 + kf8) should preserve embedded fonts via personal doc service. And the covers do show up on my Fire, Android, iOS, just not on the PW (I never use cover view there anyway).

Thanks for that info! I do the dual format but since I don't embed fonts I haven't had this difficulty.

I guess we will just have to wait until Amazon allows KF8 books to be sent via Send To Kindle or else they allow user fonts on the device. Preferably both! So many people want this I don't know why they can't or won't do it. Frustrating!

They want users to only buy books from them. I can't see them ever realising KF8 to other users, and that's effectively what allowing Send to Kindle to use them would mean. Also I doubt they'll ever allow user fonts, if anything they are locking the Kindle software up tighter, allowing minimal customisation, not relaxing it.

The ultimate lockdown would be to remove "Send to Kindle" from the software (except for Whispersync, for books bought at Amazon), and to remove the USB-port from the hardware.

Then, the only way to get books onto the Kindle device, is to buy them at Amazon and download them from the cloud. If they'd ever do something like that, I'd never buy such a Kindle.

Which Amazon knows, which is why they will never do it. They are great about giving the user power, it's just a pity they tossed the hardcore reader to emphasize ease of use.

If you ask me, they just don't think it's worth the time to spend implementing.
