I was dithering about 3G, I should have done it. This PW is perfect: set up how I like it, fab screen, in a nice Amazon cover.

I have this irrational niggling thing about the fact that its wifi only. I don't have any 3G devices (my phone is beyond dumb!). I hate phones! So I would like to be able to access wikiP when out and about, from time to time. Not just for the book references, but in galleries or museums, or when pottering around a new town. I decided the extra was just daft, but now.....

I had a 3G PW1 and it was great at the National Portrait Gallery with all those be-ruffed civil war types. Butthe screen was really blotchy so I sent it back. I dropped the 3G for the replacement and went for wifi and decided to stick with it. But....

I keep telling them that a regular cell phone works fine for receiving calls and texts and I barely use the cell thing anyway.
The younger people think I am strange not to have a smart phone. The older people ask me where they can get the same phone and service. I have a cheepo Net10 phone. Costs $15 a month and unused minutes roll over (I have over 6,000 now). The only reason why I got it in the first place was because I shop for an elderly parent, but now you need it because there are no pay phones anywhere any longer. I think Smart Phones are great, but I can't justify the monthly cost. It used to save us money for long distance, but now we get free long distance. I do have an Itouch. Love streaming. Audiobooks. Angry Birds.

Actually, there might be another important point for Amazon to NOT allow SD cards or similar external storage devices on Kindles ... potentially this would make it easier to side-load external (i.e. non-Amazon) content via the card, and they do not have any intention to make that easier for you.

Best regards,
Andy

If Amazon wanted to make side-loading hard, they would have their devices implementing the USB storage protocols, nor would they have email addresses set up to which ebooks can be emailed.

The lack of SD card slot is a cost/support vs utility trade-off.

Most of the K1 issues I read about where related to SD cards and too many books for the K1's system to handle. I wasn't surprised when it was gone for the K2.

A bit late to reply to this.

Beware if you're thinking of buying one, that the 3G Kindles in Japan can only access the 3G network in Japan. No roaming to other countries at all.

I don't know what voodoo they did to pull this off, since non-Japan 3G Kindles work fine in Japan (from what I've heard; I don't own one), but somehow they set things up so that if you buy it here, you get no 3G access outside of the country. Weird.
