I just thought the articles statements that kindle PW2 sales were down because of anticipation was news. nothing to back up rumors of release date or whether it really effects sales. You could add me to not affected.

Rumors of color e-ink may have swayed me, but do not see that anywhere.

Hmm, several years ago, I bought a Kindle Touch, with the full knowledge that another (several) models would be coming out, and we know just as much about the KPW3 as we did then...

According to this logic, no one would ever buy any piece of electronics, since they know within the year there will be a new version.

It depends a bit on the frequency, at least for me. If I buy a new device, say, an iPad, in the first month of the release, and the successor is released nine months or less later, it'll have been the last product I bought from the manufacturer, because it makes me feel "ripped off". 12-18 months are fine with me.

This isn't necessarily a strictly logical way of approaching this, but that's how I decide whether I spend money.

So in the world of smartphones, where a new model is released about once a year, what do you do?

I agree though if a new model comes out within a few months, that's disappointing, but most likely it's disappointing that I bought it right before the holiday season when I know a new one traditionally comes out. Anyone not buying a new PW2 8 months before a new one traditionally comes out is just being foolish, since the last one pretty much just came out.

While I feel mostly the same when it comes to smartphones, I'm not particularly bothered by it when it comes to the PW2. For one thing, the Paperwhite is fairly inexpensive at $99-119 so it's not exactly a hardship to buy a couple of them in the same year. And the biggest thing, I'm not tied to a 2-year contract and eternal subsidy repayment with the Paperwhite.

I don't need another e-reader and didn't upgrade from my PW1 to a PW2 because I thought the changes weren't enough to justify the cost. However, if the rumored features of the PW3 turn out to be true (primarily improved resolution and physical page-turn buttons), I'll certainly buy one if there isn't too much of a price increase.

I regularly monitor Amazon's website for an announcement of a release date, features and price but so far there's been no official announcement and nor any reliable rumors or information from third party websites. Amazon traditionally does a great job at maintaining secrecy of their product development and I wouldn't be surprised if we hear nothing new until the day the PW3 suddenly appears for pre-sale of their US website.

I find my first gen Kindle Paperwhite very thin and light already and based on the rumors, the upcoming Kindle Paperwhite 3 will be even thinner and lighter so I'm really interested to see how this will be.

Plus, the rumors say that it'll be released in April. I'm starting to doubt this. So far we haven't read anything official. Do Amazon release their Kindle products without any prior announcement/information?

I'd say there's no chance at all of an April release. Amazon generally do Kindle releases October time.

If you look at the release dates of the Kindle, they've pretty much always been released around the same time of year, and its never in April.
