I think most of what's being objected to isn't "regular" erotica, but things like Daddy/Daughter, Babysitter, Teacher, etc. fantasy titles and those generally have a different audience entirely.

I wasn't referring to erotica as such, but to the particular titles which are being permanently removed stuff like the rape, incest etc. stories. Have you seen the dino porn? I'm baffled by the fact that anyone would ever buy those.

Literotica has some interesting selections.

Different people get off on different things. I don't understand it but there are people who get off on incest, rape and the like. I seriously doubt that the vast majority of the people who read that stuff are interested in carrying out or being a victim or rape but for whatever reason, reading about it turns them on.

I have no problem with bookstores saying they won't sell those works. A book store is a private company and can sell what it wants. Let them make the call. If they choose to sell that type of stuff, make darn sure that you have a filter that requires people look for those very specific titles or key words and do not allow it to pop up with a regular search.

The real problem is that the books stores that are allowing independent publishing need to find a way to check each work that comes in and make sure it includes proper tags. There is a real incentive to not tag erotica as erotica because that probably narrows the searchs that will bring it up. So an independent author might want to skip that tag. Bookstores have to find a way to balance out their responsibility to make sure that people are able to search and not find themselves looking at material that is deemed explicit by most of society.

On a lighter note, we did a DNA test on one of our mutts (we were curious) The result came back as chihuahua and mastif. So I guess interesting match ups are possible in the animal kingdom. (She looks to be Beagel/ Australian Shepherd. We are reasonably certain that they used our money to buy some beer and threw darts at the dart board when drunk)

From what I've heard of the various sex studies referenced in the media (it's not a topic I actively track--I prefer to retain my amateur status) sexual fantasies often revolve around things a mentally healthy person would *never* even consider experiencing in real life. Which is why they pursue them in text, photo, or video form.
The problems start when they become desensitized to the stimulus or get drawn beyond fantasy.
The human brain has dangerous mechanisms that can take people down dangerous roads and there is no shortage of people willing to exploit their travels.

And on Amazon the self-publishers have been known to tick all the boxes, so erotica AND fantasy and science fiction and historical fiction and history.

To be nice they may be just ignorant that fantasy is, like, Harry Potter.

I suppose a few could be, but a lot of it is purposely mis-categorized.

For clarity--we cannot tick all the boxes. We are limited to two categories. We can enter up to...7 tags/keywords.

A few years ago, we could enter up to five categories.

The categories can, however, be changed, so an author could "move" the book around trying various categories at different times.

The categories are quite limited and are generally based on the US library of Congress cataloging categories. So, for example, there is no such thing as "Urban Fantasy" or "cozy mysteries."

There are other various Kindle categories, but those are not "setable" -- so when you see a ranking of "number 56 in such and such" that is not something that authors can set. We can "request" our book be added to something like that, but Amazon doesn't always respond.

So, for example, if you look at my Executive Affairs and Under Witch Ghost short story -- you'll see it is ranked 82 in:

Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #6,233 Free in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Free in Kindle Store)

#82 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Literature & Fiction > Humor & Satire > General Humor

But I don't set that. I can't even see a category labeled "Humor and Satire" when selecting categories.

This happens in other stores as well. Without a Bang over on Kobobooks is showing up under:

#3370 in Fiction & Literature , Fiction , Short Stories
#3907 in Fiction & Literature , Fiction , Religious
#2281 in Sci Fi & Fantasy , Science Fiction , Adventure

Note that I did NOT choose Religious--the story has nothing to do with religious and I have no idea why it shows up there. But there you have it. I've actually contacted kobobooks on the Religious thing--it's dystopian fiction, which isn't religious in my opinion, but perhaps using that word in the description caused it to show up there? No idea. Of course Kobobooks has its hands full right now so I don't expect an answer anytime soon...

A Kobo Writing Life Update

I’d like to give our authors a quick update on Kobo Writing Life in the UK and elsewhere.

As you may be aware, in the face of some fairly intense media scrutiny, we launched a major review of the books we offer for sale to make sure they comply with our content policy on offensive material. We cast a wide net across our catalogue that included genres and books coming from self-published authors, aggregators, and publishers, and we quarantined many of these while we conducted the review which made them unavailable in the UK during that time. The review had to happen fast, and we didn’t enjoy it, but with our esteemed 300-year-old retail partner on the front page of major newspapers and some content clearly in violation of our posted standards, we needed to move quickly. Almost everyone on the Kobo Content Team, spread across a dozen countries and time zones, was involved at one point or another. The urgency was driven by our desire to make sure we were running a store that met our own expectations and equally by the need to get our authors back up and available for sale again in the UK as fast as possible.

The good news is that the vast majority of self-published Kobo Writing Life titles are once again available on Kobo.com in the UK, with most authors experiencing a gap of only a few days before their books were once again in the catalogue. As well, we have been working closely with our self-publishing aggregation partners. Most of their titles are once again available in the UK or will be in the coming hours. If your book is still unavailable and you think it shouldn’t be, send a message to writinglife@kobo.com and the team will get on it.

For those few titles that remain unavailable, some feel that we chose a path of censorship. All I can say is that if your dream is to publish “barely legal” erotica or exploitative rape fantasies, distribution is probably going to be a struggle for you. We aren’t saying you can’t write them. But we don’t feel compelled to sell them. And yes, many titles live in a grey zone with far more shades than the fifty that sold so well in the past year, but that is what makes this all so challenging and so interesting. Many of our readers have no problem with an erotic title in their library next to their romance, literary fiction, investing or high-energy physics books. And we are here for the readers, so erotica stays, a small but interesting part of a multi-million-title catalogue, in all of its grey-shaded glory. My thanks go out to Mark Lefebvre and the whole Kobo Writing Life team and to all of our authors who have been so supportive and understanding in the past two weeks. We will continue to work on reviewing processes and author education about what we can take and what we can’t. It will never be perfect, but our belief continues to be that if we focus on readers and growing our business around them, we will get it right much more often than not.

Sincerely yours,
Michael Tamblyn
Chief Content Officer

Sorry to hear that. Mine are back up. It might be worth emailing writinglife@kobo.com, as suggested in the email quoted earlier.

Found this very interesting talk by Kobo's Michael Tamblyn on the whole "eroticagate" and how difficult the whole process was to handle.
