There are extreme positions at both ends of the spectrum. What could be more wasteful than using coal to power vehicles that were manufactured, transported, and sold so that working automobiles could be landfilled (cash for clunkers)? Compare that to my 2005 ford focus that gets 33 mpg. Focus wins.

Most of us know that turning the heat down a bit, turning off lights, and delaying replacement of aging electronics can help our bank accounts and the environment. If taxes encourage you to repair an older car rather than replacing it, that is good for the planet.
