The funny thing is that cybook isn't really a 6" reader because of those preposterous margins and unused header and footer space. What were they thinking? Such a waste. This kind of sloppiness is driving me mad at times.

Using custom PDFs is a way to overcome that limitation...

It is not sloppiness. It is a good design decision. Best had been to make it user configurable but if that was not possible they designed it the best way they could. I would for example never had bought a reader without margins since this makes it harder to read.

Screen real estate is crucial for me as I remember times when I used to read exclusively on my ipaq with 4" screen. Even on my ipaq I had margins turned on, but set to very small and it worked very well for me. Nevertheless, I certainly wouldn't describe cybook's use of screen real estate as a good design decision, not even close. And Jellby, thanks for the tip, it never occured to me that there's a way how to bypass that. Now I just have to figure out how to do it. |

User-configurable margins would, of course, be better. |

I think I should apologize for being too harsh on bookeen. I tried Jellby's advice and created a custom pdf and that pretty much sorted things out for me.
I was able to set up everything, face and size of fonts, margins, header, footer, line spacing. It's early christmas for me. ![]() And I even got fixed page numbering, awesome. Last edited by Abelturd; 03-08-2009 at 07:47 AM. |

there are various sizes within paperbacks, so there is likely to be similar in readers...?

There's clearly a market for devices with larger screens, for textbooks, etc.

And tempered glass could never, ever, be the answer for two more reasons: weight and glare issues. But I am sure that there are ways of makings these things a little more resistant... The problem might be, as always, the cost... Last edited by nelsonescorcio; 03-11-2009 at 05:36 AM. |

It was announced only a couple of weeks ago that PVI are about to start mass production of "flexible" screens, so hopefully they'll start appearing in devices in a few months.

I've been playing with the custom pdfs and different layout settings for a while now. And to prove my point I'd like to show you that the margins and unused header/footer do make a difference.
By exporting an ebook to a custom pdf I managed to cut down on the number of pageturns from 1500 to about 950. Without using any extreme measures, the same font face and size, line spacing of 13 pts, 0.2 mm margins on both sides, 0.1 from the top, 0.4 from the bottom. The text is easy to read, easy to orientate in. 500 page turns is definitely a difference which does even reflect in the battery life. I hope this was not too far off topic. If so, pardon me. Big mistake of mine. There are, after all, many types of tempered glass (not only the ones I was talking about), and it is common the production with thickness well under 5 mm... Sorry. I should have confirmed what I was told...
I guess I won't talk about glass in the near future... ![]() Last edited by nelsonescorcio; 03-11-2009 at 06:13 AM. |

Mmm
In terme of update for Gen 3 i would say
- folders - pdf support yet again. As for an eventual gen 4 one of the anoyance is the usb cable. The protection over it is anoying when you want to plug a cable, and requiers you to get the reader out of the jacket. While of some point i would like having a biger screen (to read pdf properly) , it have the avantage to be small and light when you carry it around every day. Not being ale to take notes was a disapointement. But then, the only way would be a touch screen -> more expensive. I have no idea how much though. Maybe have more than one device at the same time, so as to attract more users ![]() http://www.businesswire.com/portal/s...14&newsLang=en I bumped onto that one. What where some talking about the source ? they seam to be availible on the website. Last edited by EowynCarter; 03-11-2009 at 11:33 AM. |
