I've read all of them (own quite a number, rest borrowed from library). Guess I know just about every way to liquidate someone so hope no body upsets me. . Also watched all the TV shows (Miss Marple & Poirot, and the others where neither of them are in it). Prefer Marple to Poirot. Favourite is probably 'The Moving Finger' followed by 'A Murder is Announced'

Saw the play 'Murder on the Nile' last week. (which I think is slightly different from 'Death on the Nile') and enjoyed it, although I worked out 'Whodunit' before the end. Also so 'The Mousetrap' in London a few years ago. I've enjoyed most of them, although some are a bit dated now.

Which book should one start with, if you are new to mystery novels, and especially A. Christie?

There are two Christie eBooks in the MR library that are out of copyright.

The Mysterious Affair at Styles is Christie's first book and a Poirot book. It's quite good and free here at the MR library.

They are only out of copyright for people in the US. Certainly not in Denmark.

She is at Open Library though I don't know how many copies of a given book are ebooks. http://openlibrary.org/authors/OL27695A/Agatha_Christie And some of them are in Daisy format whatever that is.

Daisy format is a "talking book" format for the blind.

Sounds good to me. It's a good idea to read the Poirot novels in order (you don't have to read every one, but don't read earlier ones before later ones) because he often talks about his earlier cases, and gives away their solution. The same thing occurs to a rather lesser extent in the "Miss Marple" novels (in particular, you should read "A Caribbean Mystery" before "Nemesis").

Thanks for the list. This brought back many memories. I read most of her books during the summer holidays when we were in "cottage country". The small town that was close by had a summer theatre and offered several of her plays. Must start rereading some of them again.

That list is going to have you reading books in a series out of order. Best to read in order. Especially the Hercule Poirot ones.

The first one I read was 'A Murder is Announced' (Marple) and that would be a good one to start with, for Poirot I would choose 'Evil Under the Sun' or 'Mrs McGinty's Dead'.

The books can really be read in any order, because they are all self contained novels and apart from 'Caribbean Mystery' and 'Nemesis' don't really depend on any of the others. 'Nemesis' doesn't depend on 'Caribbean Mystery' for the plot, but does follow on from it. Without trying to give to much away, in 'Nemesis', Miss Marple is given some money and a task from one of the characters in 'Caribbean Mystery'.

I would also suggest 'And Then There Was None' ( which has had its original title changed twice because they were deemed to be politically incorrect). The Original title had been changed to 'Ten Little Indians', but even that has been deemed unsuitable.

True though you have to consider the times a book is written in as well I think. It was written in 1938 or 1939 (published in 1939) so the world was a bit different back then. There were still segregated restaurants, theater's, bathrooms and even water fountains back then. And of course the threat of Nazi aggression was in the air too so I imagine the title of a book was of secondary concern back then.
