Selective enforcement is unavoidable in most systems of rules. The mods can't be everywhere, instantly, 24/7. And where ever the line is set, there are going to be judgment calls.

Also, I think you have to look at the intent. Threads on which Bible to put on your eReader would seem a literal violation of the rule against threads on religious matters. But they are fine because of not being associated with flame wars.

The topic of book piracy is inherently a bit political. So -- and I don't really know this -- moderators are conceivably slower to shut down political back and forth there than in a thread on how to repair your Kindle.

I think it would be annoying if moderators instantly jumped on every impulsive one-off rule violation. But I'm glad the see them step in before it gets super ugly.

Now I'll have to do something ugly to show myself as other than a total suck-up

The purpose of the rules isn't "keep all the discussion focused on ereaders." Discussions that get too far from ereaders get thrown in the lounge, but there's no attempt to avoid those conversations, just to keep them from being in the way of the ereader and ebook discussions.

The politics-and-religion posts being isolated is to avoid flamewars, not to avoid those subjects. Topics that hit close to the line without devolving into bickering are allowed--in part, because ebooks *is* a political topic; copyright and other business laws are a notable part of how ebooks work. Noting which political factions favor or disfavor ebooks, or copyright laws, or international business, or new technology, is relevant to the interests of a lot of people at Mobileread.

Reacting to the "fox news" part of the post isn't different from the anti-piracy crowd sneering at posts by techdirt. Acknowledging the biases in the news sources is part of staying informed about ereaders and ebooks.

(Yes, it would be nice to talk more about the issue of "when's the best time to buy this emerging technology?" But that doesn't mean the political edge of the conversation is wrong or off-topic.)

I think, of the first ten posts on this topic, three (6, 9, 10) bashed Fox in one way or another. Fox did not originate the original story and there was no political flavor to the story at all.

The stated intent of the guidelines is to maintain a "a friendly and inclusive forum."

We know who doesn't like Fox or MSDNC or CNN or the BBC. There's no need to take a poll every time someone links to a story on one of their news sites.

I think the copyright/fair use issue is completely germane to e-readers. I know that gets political and people *should* try to keep the tone polite, but DRM, portability, licensing, and access to content are central to the selection and use of an e-reader.

To OP, thanks for letting us know that new tech was coming. Some of us will benefit from a delayed decision either by having more choice or enjoying lower prices on old tech.

It's the mirror image to MSNBC. Both biased, both horrible, one right, one left, though I imagine on this forum FOX gets the worse treatment.

I'd sooner trust MSNBC then I would Fox.

As to the best time to buy a reader... if you don't know the release schedule for different brands, ask and when you find out, if your purchase is close to the release schedule, wait for the new model(s) to be released.
