I do have a problem with the fact that JKR said she wanted everyone to have the same e-book experience. To me that means all the e-books would use the same fonts and have the same illustrations. It should not matter that they were not in the UK version and they were in the US. The e-books should all have the illustrations or not.
I read that as meaning "the same experience as an eBook that you'd get from the paper book". Don't you think it would be more problematic to have eBooks which were different from the paper books?

I agree with you that if would be nice if the UK books had the illustrations, but they don't, and never have had. I didn't know until I read this thread that the US versions had illustrations .

Not really something to worry about. I'm told all the Harry Potter books (official and otherwise) are already available on the darknet.

That doesn't mean somebody wouldn't do something with it anyway. And I was speaking of watermarking in general if it becomes a more popular method. I would prefer for books to be just plain DRM-free as the music industry has eventually done.

Aren't songs you buy on iTunes watermarked?

Watermarking is a great compromise. We get what we want, full use without DRM, and there is some protection for authors and publishers. I am not paranoid about this and would greatly welcome it if others followed in Pottermore's footsteps. To demand that there is no protection at all would be unreasonable.

I would be very annoyed by that as well. You want to be able to read them as they were written.

It's funny how the rules differ, depending on where you live. At the Canadian portal, I was able to select either the American or the UK versions. I guess because we use many but not all the English spellings - my kindle has two dictionaries as well - English & American- though oddly, not French.

I don't understand the geo-restrictions regarding music. I may and do order CDs from the US Amazon, but I cannot download the same music, even when it's a Canadian artist, or Canadian label. Go figure.

I agree, as long as the watermarking doesn't expose the consumer to needless risk, like exposing a credit number or such. Then we'd have hackers targeting us to get our ebooks.

I think they only want to track you. As you had to register to a shop, in order to make payments, some ID of that shop + some ID of you from that shop would be enough.

And if a book is only watermarked, but would leave me free to load it on all my devices and even format change it (so I can actually read it on all my devices), I'm a happy girl. Because that's the only reason I clean any book I buy that is infected with DRM.

They've been that since book 1 was released.
