I've read many Nora Roberts novels that I enjoy but oddly, I've never been able to get into the JD Robb books. I've tried several times and I always quit reading. |

As someone who reads 95% romance, I have no desire to read Fifty Shades of Grey either. I glanced at the writing style and groaned. I have no idea why it's so popular. Just another fad like Twilight and it's horrible writing.

Hmm, I never thought romance novels had to have sex in them because I've read romance novels that don't have sex in them. They're usually romantic comedies but they're still romances. I read one a few months back called Pinch Me that had no sex scenes at all. I just read I've Got Your Number, which also had no sex scenes. They both allude to the heroine having sex but the sex takes place off the page.
I'm sure I've read some non-comedic romances that also don't have sex but I'll have to think a little harder about that. Anyway, I hope other posters have established that romance does not equal porn for women. There is porn for women but it's not romance novels. As for 50 Shades of Grey, I will never read that. I just don't get how people can be turned on by domination, abuse and manipulation (and I'm not talking about the BDSM). That's not sexy or romantic. Last edited by faithbw; 03-29-2012 at 06:48 PM. |

I read one romance where there was a lot of sexual tension but the sex scene came at the end. I can't remember the name of it now. Actually the novel itself was rather run of the mill but I still remember it because it delayed the sex scene so much, more than in other romance novels with sex scenes.

i remember my very first clash with romance novels. i was a young teen when i saw a nora roberts novel on my sister's shelf. i didn't realize it was romance until i saw the cover, and then suspiciously skimmed the book. it was the erotica parts that got me hooked. strangely enough, now i prefer m/m romance

I think the problem is the same that you see in the fantasy genre. There are lots of excellent fantasy stories which don't involve orphaned children discovering they have magical powers and saving the world, and don't features dwarves, elves and the rest of cookie-cutter fantasy 101, but for someone coming in from the outside, there is such an overwhelming amount does does fit that mold, because it is so much easier to write, that you'd never see the interesting stuff.
In the same way, perhaps erotica is simply easier to write than romance. |

getting back to the original topic for a moment, apparently movie rights for 50 Shades has been sold for a huge amount of money.
SmartBitchesTrashyBooks has an interesting discussion on this. http://smartbitchestrashybooks.com/b...-movie-success |

oh, I love the Amelias! Ah, Emerson (pats heart).
They're also amazingly read by Barbara Rosenblat in audio. If you want an audio tour-de-force, listen to her reading of Night Train to Memphis. At the end, she sings a country and western song in an American, British, and German accent. astonishing. |
