3.19 was released in 2016? So 6 years ago? Some people would probably be willing to take the inconvenience of a factory reset every 6 years.

Why not just properly register and then keep the WiFi off?

And no it's not silly. You lose everything including annotations. A backup database cannot be restored. Basically, you're toast. And yes, i did happen (from what I remember) in a version 4.x firmware.

For all we know it could happen again in a version 5 firmware as it seems to be rather different.

The home screen is pointless if not registered.

I don't miss it. The My Books screen (default home with SideloadedMode=true) is wonderful.

You are not asked for an address or payment method and even a fakeuser@inventeddomain.etc used to work.

No spam in 10+ years of a real email address on a Kobo.

When someone asks about registering a Kobo without a Kobo account, we know that person has not read any of the other threads on this topic or it would never be asked.

But we could go back and restore the previous firmware and maybe an older database in that case. I do keep the last backed-up database from the previous firmware just in case.

You still have to register. That won't do for someone that paranoid.

I bet the OP has a cell phone, computer, streaming service and/or TV service and they are all registered. So why not register the Kobo?

When it comes to Kobo, unless there is a feature of bugfix you specifically want, I would say anyone is *way* better off not updating. Of course, that's only an option if sideloading exclusively.

I believe there is patch for that: it asks before applying an update (with some caveats).

Hi. But, is anyone able to use kobo as a generic stand alone ereader? I attempted today but I really could not. In the beginning, I logged out, then I restarted it by a factory reset but in both cases the first thing kobo did was asking me my WiFi key in order to connect itself to my account
Has it fooled me around?...
