Funny thing, just this morning I am ready to start on a new book and my mini USB cable has gone missing. I want to read my NEWEST book which I haven't put on the reader yet. So even though I have 100 or so unread books on my reader, I am getting the shakes because I can't read the ONE I want to read. I may have to go Radioshack today and pay some inflated price for a new cable. (I know, I know, all you people with wifi readers are mystified by this strange problem.)

Do you have an SD card at home? You could load it onto that, until you find/get a new cable.

My library is currently 430-odd books & the calibre library is 0.5Gb. But the collection is steadily growing. (Can't stop buying new titles, still format shifting lots of my old pbooks).
I have my entire library available on my e-readers - the lesser-used titles on the older Sony, everything else on the red liseuse. No performance problems so far, and everything is held in main memory at the moment. Obviously there's plenty of room for expansion.

Having the entire library available on one or other reader is particularly advantageous as I now spend 6+ months cruising my canal boat, and hence have to depend on 12volt electricity.

I am not a bunny, but I'm told they are quite tasty.

Considering the savings we had to have for our move back to the states, we didn't have much chance to go anywhere or do anything off base.

The exchange rate was 103 cents = 1 yen when we arrived, and 98 cent = 1 yen when we left. We couldn't afford to buy much off base, so if we couldn't get it on base, and we couldn't get anyone to mail it to us, we didn't have it.

The second year we were there was when the mail order catalogs stopped sending to APO FPO boxes. That hurt a lot of people at the time.

I guess I'm a little different than most. I'm still running a Hanlin V3+. It has a removable SD chip and a semi standard Nokia user replaceable battery. Also I run OpenInkPot software. (And I have off site backups of the hardware as well as the software.)

The combination doesn't seem to have any problems slowing down with a bunch of books, and I keep around 1500+ on it now, in folders (by type/author).

Newer gizmos may have nicer features, but they have drawbacks too...I'll stick with what runs...

I think you mean 103 cents = 100 yen and 98 cents = 100 yen, right? Nowadays it is around 76 yen to a dollar, so it is getting harder and harder for those stationed there. Didn't see as many around in Tokyo this time as I used to.

No -. My strategy is: first, have a mix of reading options, to suit my mood. Then, i keep the related books on the kindle in case I need to refer back to an earlier one. So if I'm reading Dorothy Sayers, I want all the books in the series on ( or all of author in non- fiction), etc. It adds up to about 60 on the reader at once.

I haven't addded more, because I more would overtax the reader, and make it slower - but based on these posts - maybe large libraries are fine.

My calibre library is backed up by apple's 'time machine' program. But to be extra safe - i also have a second little harddrive for books, music, and pictures.

But all the "i got stranded away from my home" posts make me worry that i should carry a third backup of books with me: are thumb drives, memory cards and DVDs all equally reliable?

Man, that's pretty impressive! To show how young I still am, I will admit that I didn't even know that e-books existed 25 years ago.

I suggest a third-party web-based backup, like DropBox or Carbonite.

If you do then check out some of the members signatures here. People have links to Dropbox etc and they receive an extra 500 MB of storage if you sign up through their link. Just a way to help out each other here.

They are really handy, you can access your files from pretty much anywhere. I keep a good chunk of my library on Dropbox. I also use Box, as I got 50 gigs for free when I purchased my HP touchpad. I believe that iPad users also get the free gigs.

Sure, plus instant acess anywhere to gutemberg, amazon and the likes through 3G.

BTW, my 1-year-old 8GB memory began failing, so I copied it all to the PC and transfered to my new 16GB one. No that it matters much, it seems about 2000 books took barely more than 120MB. All hail ePub vs stupid PDFs...
