Root Explorer is working, it's File Expert that is currently broken.

Figures.

Just whent through all the steps again, just to make sure that I'd done everything correctly.

I did.

It's still not working, and I'm still getting the same message.

sigh

I got stuck at 8). Where do you get those files and where do you copy them to? When I click on the last step Mount as Read Write, it just says Success for a second then disappears and nothing more happens. And I still can't download apps from Android Market.

It won't work unless you install those files, obviously. Grab them from the link provided and after mounting as read-write, continue following the rest of the steps.

They come from the zip in step 5 and it clearly says to copy them to /system/app.

The problem is that I can't find the zip file I'm suppose to download from the cyanogenmod website.

Not to be rude, but if you can't google gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip ( This is the first link to pop up with a google search) and follow simple instructions, you should not be rooting your device or trying to install market onto it.

Sorry, I did, but somehow mist it the first time. Now it worked. Why do you say that i shouldn't try to install market onto it? Everybody says that Opera is a really good browser for Kobo, but I can't manage to install it otherwise.

By the way, downloaded the file and unzip it, but I have a Mac, and my computer didn't recognize and read the files. Does anyone knows if I they are still going to work on the Kobo if I transfer them, or I should just give up.

You don't have to add Google Market to get most apps (unless they are paid). You can search for them using "apk" after the name of the app and using a term like direct download or go to some of the other markets like Slideme or Handago.
Here is a link to a forum which gives a list of links to alternative markets:
http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f...markets-25777/

As well, there is an earlier post called jefftheworld's best app package (do a search for it) that has several essential app files in it, ready to install.
I don't have the market installed on my vox but have been able to find most of the apps I wanted (the free ones).

Because rooting gives you access to the system files on your device, meaning one slip up and your Vox is now a paperweight.

Your Mac wouldn't recognize an apk file, nor would a windows box. The apk files will be fine, providing you didn't do anything other than unzip the folder containing them.

You can get opera straight from the opera website, you don't need market.

I've tried, but every time I get the message "There are no Android phones associated with this account. Please sign in with a different account" and I can't continue from there. Then someone suggested to go this way. That's why I've been trying to do it. I'm not too crazy about it either and it's also above my skills level anyway, but I got the impression that this is the best way.

Well, if for some reason you can't download it using the vox's browser, you should try getting it using your PC's browser and side load it. That'll be easier than installing market.

[edit]: using the vox's browser go to m.opera.com click on other download options and then use one of the direct links.
