And at the risk of sounding a bit condescending here, but one of the first things I learned in my tech support job is that anyone can learn, if they're just willing to do it. The biggest problem 95% of my customers have is that they're so convinced they can't learn, because "computers are difficult!" that they are actually stopping themselves from learning. Most of the time, it's because they're so scared of screwing up they get paralyzed at the thought of taking the side off the computer and looking inside. Removing a part and replacing it? Unthinkable. Panic!

Of course, it does become easier to learn with a good teacher nearby, but approaching it with a "I'm smart, I can figure this out"-attitude definitely helps.

But you CAN ask for help at the place that you found those tools, and people there will be delighted to assist you.

It also does help when things work the way they should.

Even though you can't ask here, you should be able to ask where you downloaded the tools from. Worth a shot.

EDIT:
And Harry beat me to it.

Centralization of your purchases on Amazon servers has its own disadvantages. In a battle to prevent piracy, Amazon has made centrifugation to a point of threshold, where if servers crack down in a calamity or your account becomes "locked"/"on hold" somehow, you lose access to all purchases.

There should be some way to solve this issue. For example, unsigned inaccessible copies of your books should be made available for download and personal storage. Kindle for PC can be made to authorize your account once and it can sign copies of books for your Kindle based on unique code for your device. (Similar to: iTunes signs firmware before installing it on iDevices)

What are your alternatives to this? How do you manage your digital library in crisis-free state?

Years ago, Amazon changed to mobi for Ebooks, and several PDF books I had purchased eventually died when they decided to turn off that DRM server. I swore then that I would strip DRM and keep my own backup. It's illegal, but I feel I am morally right. Screw them.....

There are all sorts of things that are illegal to do in connection with stripping DRM, but the simple act of stripping the DRM on a legally acquired ebook for your own personal use is not one of them.

(Hand me that thimble - I'm still trying to bail out the Titanic...)

I prefer to have my eReaders loaded with DRM-stripped copy because they are then usable backups.

There is that, but I already have 3 copies of my Calibre library, one of which is on a USB stick on my keychain which goes with me wherever I go

Katie1 - It's a blog. You can post a comment to the blog. Please do so. You'll get the help you need. While blog comments aren't my favourite support mechanism, that's the method chosen there, and it works.

And, again, he is not being denied access to books he has downloaded or books he has on his device. Only books he kept in the cloud and nowhere else.
Somehow, I don't think that's the case (not unless you keep your device offline or block the Kindle app on a firewall). I bought a (pretty horribly formatted) Kindle ebook from Amazon. I requested a refund from Amazon and within 5 minutes of the CSR processing the request, the locally downloaded copy of the ebook was removed from the Kindle for PC and Kindle for iPad libraries. In my case, I obviously don't care as I have no intention of reading the ebook. However, imagine if the same thing had happened to a personal library of hundreds or thousands of purchased books because the account was suspected of being hacked. The only way to have circumvented that was if you had made DRM-free back-up copies of your ebooks - not really something the average consumer bothers with.

They didn't take his books from his device (read the linked article). They just denied him access to his Amazon account. If he had downloaded the books, he would not have had this issue.

(I know that Amazon can remove books from devices; I've also returned books, and that's what happens with library books, too). But that's not what happened to this guy.

Are you sure? That's not said in the article. In fact, at the end there is this:

Quote:
None of them can tell me if I will ever receive the content I have paid for.

I.e.:
Quote:
One day in October, Kindle owner Ryan couldn't log in to his Amazon account.
Quote:
I was recently unable to login to my account with the message that the password was "denied".
There is nothing at all about books being removed from his device (or any mention of his device at all, or what device it is). There are these two statements:

Quote:
I no longer have access to the nearly $1000 in Kindle content I have purchased.
and

Quote:
None of them can tell me if I will ever receive the content I have paid for.
Both of which are consistent with him storing the books in the cloud.

I would think that someone whose books were removed from his device would at least mention that point, if not start off by saying something like "I went to read my Kindle and discovered that all of my books had been removed!" (Instead of talking about his account having a "hold" on it.)
